Sonja Seglin is a therapist with 15 years of experience with clients. Most of her clients are people who feel stuck, and looking for some level of movement and flexibility in their lives. They are going through some sort of major life transition, and disappointed at how they ended up feeling about it. For example, the new mother who had expected to be glowing throughout pregnancy and beaming at her newborn instead feels scared, lonely, disconnected, and incredibly anxious. And then, she feels guilty because she isn't experiencing the overwhelming surge of love she had expected to. Or, the graduating college student who had anticipated feeling confident and excited about starting a new job, but finds that he is having trouble getting out of bed in the morning and feels lonely. There are also quite a few clients in Sonja's practice who are looking for a deeper understanding of themselves.
In session, Sonja draws on her training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which focuses on the mind-body connection and the ways our nervous systems sometimes get stuck in the past. She brings in visualizations and mindfulness exercises as appropriate. When possible, she goes outdoors for therapy sessions. She also uses her training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help clients get unstuck from unhealthy and undesirable habitual patterns. Combined with the power of the therapy relationship, these approaches are potent in their ability to shift mindsets.
Sonja has an office in Montclair, NJ. She also sees clients at the South Mountain Reservation, or via telehealth. She is licensed to see clients in both Illinois and New Jersey.
Years of Experience: 16 years
Adolescent mental health - If your teen or preteen seems low, lacking self esteem, struggling to try new things, I can help. Through outdoor work combined with in office talk therapy, we can unlock your child's potential.
Anxiety - In my practice, anxiety usually shows up as overthinking. Sometimes this can also lead to panic attacks that seemingly come out of nowhere. While some people experience anxiety in other ways, my approach is best suited for clients who can identify with having a mind that just won't stop.
Parents of young children - The tantrums, the lack of sleep, the total disruption of any routine, the advice coming at you from every angle...parenting is not easy. Sure, you're told to treasure the time, but you are also allowed to feel angry and frustrated. Let me help you find your best self so that you can bring that version of you to your family.
Trauma - Nightmares, flashbacks, constant guilt or shame, difficulty relating to others, all of these are signs of traumatic stress. I use special techniques to help my clients get over their trauma memories. If something awful happened to you, it's not your fault. If you're here, it's probably because that event has effected you in ways that it doesn't have to. Let's get your life back so you can fully inhabit it again. You deserve that.
Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy - I am trained in the use of ketamine in healing mental and spiritual injuries. By using this medication, you will be better primed to start incorporating new and chosen habits. That means integrating the insights you get from therapy in a practical way. KAP can be used to help clients deal with any number of issues, specifically depression and PTSD.
