Message to clients

My approach to mental health involves asking, How well can this person love and work? How flexible is this person in coping with difficulty? What is the nature of this person's suffering? I try to address all three areas with compassion, empathy, and good humor. With 25 years of experience working with a variety of people, I find the quality of the therapeutic relationship is often the best predictor of a therapy where a person feels, heard, affirmed, challenged, and helped to heal and grow.

Perinatal mental health - Anxiety, depression, and relationship concerns specific to childbearing women and their families; Navigating complex emotions and the transition to parenthood during pregnancy and the postpartum period

Postpartum adjustment - Exploring the hormonal, logistical, and emotional challenges that come after having a child

College mental health - Adjusting to college; managing developmental and emotional challenges in school; balancing schoolwork and personal life

Physician mental health - Dr. Spillane has a special sensitivity to the emotional and developmental needs of physicians, especially those in training. For 15 years, she taught in the "Patient-Doctor" seminar for first and third year medical students at Harvard Medical School

Psycho-oncology - Working with the aspects of cancer that go beyond medical treatment and include lifestyle, psychological and social aspects of cancer
