Professional statement

Allahna Kaj has an fresh, integrative approach to individualized psychotherapy. She grounds her work in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which provides a framework for helping her clients understand and regulate their thoughts, emotions, behavior and reactions. She has seven years of experience as a Group Facilitator and Individual Therapist in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), an evidence-based skills and mindfulness-based approach for creating emotional regulation and insght. Her approach is also strongly informed by Polyvagal Theory, focused on the Vagal Nerve’s role in moderating the autonomic and sympathetic nervous system and EMDR, which uses a form of tapping into clients' internal energy to calm and develop insight. Ms. Kaj received her BA from UMass-Boston (2002) with honors in a double major—Psychology and Study of Religion with an undergraduate honors thesis on integrating psychology and religion. This was followed by a MSW from Smith College School for Social Work (2004), where her research focused on overcoming personal and spiritual crisis. After graduating, Ms. Kaj completed the UMASS Medical School practicum in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).

For 20 years, Ms. Kaj has helped her clients navigate life’s challenges—depression, anxiety, trauma, loss, medical problems, substance use, aging, disability. She sees her Texas and Colorado clients by telehealth and, in Colorado, sees clients in her office. For a free 20-minute consultation, please contact her on this page.

Message to clients

Life is a gift, a song waiting to be sung. But life is no easy walk. Whether it’s a lifetime of bad breaks, heart-rending losses, crippling anxiety or you’re looking to occupy your place in the sun, we can encourage new skills and a mindset to thrive. Building a rich and meaningful life means taking a risk. As your ally, I take that risk with you. I help make your growth simple--not effortless, but simple and achievable.

I base my work on a deep belief in the power of the therapeutic relationship. I also deeply believe in the effectiveness of research-supported techniques like CBT, DBT, ACT and EMDR. But it’s the therapeutic relationship that brings those techniques to life. It creates a dynamic synergy that’s larger than the sum of its parts -- like H20 is more than Hydrogen and Oxygen. I offer psychoeducation, role-plays and often ask my clients to journal between sessions with words, music, art or poetry to help process their emotions. I’ll walk with you as we look back on the past and we’ll look forward to envision what could be. We’ll find the pivot points, anticipate the roadblocks and try out your work-arounds.

My special passion is integrating my clients’ religious and spiritual beliefs into traditional therapy. I identify as Christian and I was raised in the church. I left at 21, traveled and returned, but I've been blessed by taking a long walk within Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic and Sufi traditions.
