Professional statement

Amanda Vaughan is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor committed to empowering individuals seeking to create change in their lives. Many of her clients are struggling with stress and anxiety, trying to deepen intimacy or communication in their relationships, or even looking to turn the volume down on their inner critic. Together, she works with clients to build a collaborative therapeutic environment that allows them to gradually discover what may be preventing them from building a more meaningful, intentional life.

Sessions with Amanda include insight-oriented work and skills-based approaches. She gently challenges clients to explore the root of their symptoms, allowing them to gain new insight into patterns in their lives, bring mindful awareness to these patterns, and focus on intentionally shifting their behavior. She also encourages clients to utilize various body-focused techniques; these skills create a sense of calm in the body, allowing them the safety necessary to process difficult emotions or experiences.

With a strong background in acute hospital settings, Amanda is uniquely skilled in working with those who have experienced trauma and loss. She takes special care in creating a therapeutic space conducive to processing this unique type of pain, helping her clients move through these painful experiences and find relief.

Amanda is committed to building an inclusive practice. With a personal and professional emphasis on social justice, she is sensitive to the needs of those with varied backgrounds, identities, and experiences; she welcomes them all.

Message to clients

It can be so helpful to find someone to talk to where you can just be yourself and talk about yourself for an hour, someone objective and focused on your growth and healing. That's what many of my clients have said to me about what is most helpful to them about our work together, having someone to talk to that is outside of the situation they are dealing with, that can ask them thought provoking questions, and provide feedback. Therapy is certainly hard work, it can be painful, emotional, uncomfortable, but it can be made a lot easier when can move through it with someone you trust.

It can also be made easier when you're able to laugh, I find humor to be an important part of therapy. Sometimes life is truly ridiculous, "you can't make this up" sort of shocking or confusing, sometimes, just telling a funny story or talking about a hilarious TV show can help us through difficult times. This is not just because it feels good to laugh, but because when we are engaged with humor, we are relaxed, open, and using the parts of our brains associated with self-reflection, personality, and emotional processing. Laughter can definitely be an important part of healing.
