Professional statement

Dr. Amelia Aldao is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and the Founder of Together CBT. This practice specializes in social anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), body-focused repetitive behaviors (such as trichotillomania and skin picking), sleep, stress, and depression. Together CBT has clinical psychologists and therapist trainees (PhD and PsyD students) who offer services at a lower fee.

Together CBT's approach is firmly rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a skills-based approach to talk therapy that allows clients to identify and address individual problems and concerns. This includes exposure and response prevention (ERP), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for anxiety disorders, emotion regulation therapy (ERT) for generalized anxiety disorder, habit reversal training (HRT) for body focused repetitive behaviors (skin picking, hair pulling), trauma-focused CBT for post-traumatic stress disorder, and mindfulness-based therapy for stress reduction.

In addition to her private practice clinical work, Dr. Aldao is extensively involved in teaching: she trains Psychiatry Residents at Mount Sinai Hospital and Graduate Students in Clinical Psychology at Columbia University and Yeshiva University. She is a science blogger for Psychology Today and has held leadership roles at the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT). She obtained a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Yale University and conducted her pre-doctoral internship (residency) at Weill Cornell Medical School – New York Presbyterian Hospital. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with honors in Psychology. Dr. Aldao has previously been a tenure-track research professor of Psychology at The Ohio State University (60+ scientific publications) and a Management Consultant at a “Big 3” firm,  Boston Consulting Group.

Message to clients

Hello! I'm Dr. Amelia Aldao and I have over 15 years of experience doing CBT with clients struggling with anxiety disorders. I also teach and supervise clinical psychology doctoral students who are learning CBT. I was a tenure-track research professor at The Ohio State University for 4 years. In that capacity, I conducted extensive research on anxiety disorders and published over 60 scientific articles. I'm a therapist and a scientist! Crucially, I'm a strong believer in evidence-based medicine, particularly in the power of exposure therapy in helping clients overcome their fears and open themselves up to new possibilities. I'm very action-oriented, but also highly empathetic. I focus a lot on exposure exercises, while also keeping in mind that each client has their own journey and will be ready to do exposures in their own time. My ultimate goal is to teach clients CBT skills so that they can become "their own therapist," feel empowered, and gain control over their lives. I have deep expertise in social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic, and OCD. At my practice, Together CBT, we have a team of psychologists and PhD student therapists from top academic programs in clinical psychology offering services to adults and children at a wide range of fees.
