Professional statement

Dr. Amelia Aldao is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, and the Founder of Together CBT. She specializes in anxiety, particularly social anxiety, as well as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), stress, and depression. She is a science blogger for Psychology Today and holds leadership roles at the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT). She obtained a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Yale University and conducted her pre-doctoral internship (residency) at Weill Cornell Medical School – New York Presbyterian. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with honors in Psychology. Dr. Aldao has previously been a tenure-track research professor of Psychology at The Ohio State University (60+ scientific publications) and a Management Consultant at a “Big 3” firm,  Boston Consulting Group.

Dr. Aldao’s approach is firmly rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a skills-based approach to talk therapy that allows clients to identify and address individual problems and concerns. She also implements emerging, evidence-based techniques like acceptance-based approaches, mindfulness-based CBT, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and emotion regulation therapy.

Dr. Aldao oversees a number of therapy groups, which empower clients to gain perspectives on their struggles and connect with others. Groups often entail exposure, coping techniques, as well as buddy systems outside the group.

In her work with OCD, Dr. Aldao is an expert in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which is widely acknowledged as the most effective, evidence-supported treatment for the treatment of OCD with or without medication.

In addition to her private practice clinical work, Dr. Aldao is extensively involved in mental health research, having authored and co-authored papers on anxiety and mood disorders. She also trains Psychiatry Residents at Mount Sinai Hospital and Graduate Students in Clinical Psychology at Columbia University.

Dr. Aldao is progress-oriented, and sets up treatment to ensure clients both attain and understand their personal developments over time. Her office is located in the Garment District, steps away from Penn Station.

Message to clients

Hello! I'm Dr. Amelia Aldao and I have 10+ years of expertise delivering CBT to clients struggling with anxiety disorders as well as teaching and supervising clinical psychology doctoral students learning CBT. I was a tenure-track research professor at Ohio State for 4+ years. In that capacity, I have conducted extensive research on anxiety disorders and have published over 60 scientific articles. I'm a therapist and a scientist! Crucially, I'm a strong believer in evidence-based medicine, particularly in the power of exposure therapy in helping clients overcome their fears and open themselves up to new possibilities. I'm very action-oriented, but also highly empathetic. I focus
a lot on exposure exercises, while also keeping in mind that each client has their own journey and will be ready to do exposures in their own time. My ultimate goal is to teach clients CBT skills so that they can become "their own therapist," feel empowered, and gain control over their lives. I have deep expertise in social anxiety, generalized anxiety, panic, and OCD.
