Professional statement

Cathleen Young is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Mental Health Counselor. Cathleen supports adults, both in individual and couples settings, as they work to overcome their trauma histories. Many of Cathleen’s clients have suffered from traumatic experiences as children or adults, which may now present as PTSD, low self-esteem, or difficulty regulating their emotions. Their relationships are fraught with worry and anxiety, which may lead to feeling codependent with their friends or partners or to conversely withdraw from important connection with others. They seek a way to move forward without their pervasive self-doubt, which brings them to therapy with Cathleen.

Cathleen’s approach to working with clients draws from thoughts-based therapy modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Through this type of therapy, clients reflect on the ways that their self-talk negatively impacts their mood or their self-worth. Cathleen also practices Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, which can help to alleviate the symptoms of trauma or PTSD. She has extensive training in yoga and enjoys incorporating movement and mindfulness practices into her work with clients, which can be a helpful tool to use when needing to ground oneself after talking about difficult topics.

Cathleen is a client-centered therapist, which means that she lets the client lead the conversation. Her style is warm and compassionate, and she sees therapy as teamwork. She enjoys getting to know her clients as whole people, learning about who they are, what they’re passionate about, and what their goals are for their mental health.

Message to clients

Congratulations on taking the first steps toward making whatever change you are seeking. Sometimes we think that getting started is the hardest part only to discover that the work has only just begun. The truth is, therapy is hard. Sometimes, it is really, really hard. When you find a therapist with whom you feel a genuine connection and sense of safety or security, it can help the healing process feel a little bit easier.

My hope is to provide a space for you to sit with someone and feel heard, understood, and seen, really seen. A space in which we sit together and have a conversation with each other, and out of that conversation comes insights, awareness, understanding, trust, healing, and a sense of true self-love. We all have experiences that impact and shape the decisions we make, the behaviors we exhibit, who we are, and how we show up in the world. My hope for you is that you will connect to those experiences in whatever way you need which will help you make the changes you want and lead you to cultivate a life worth living.

I invite you to allow me to walk with you on your journey. If you are ready to embark with me on this challenging, yet rewarding experience, please call me for a free phone consultation to discuss your needs and to answer any questions.
