Professional statement

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate (LMHCA) from the state of Washington. I work with individual adults of both sexes, and the LGBQT community. As a therapist or counselor, I support individuals facing challenges related to work, relationships, and cultural adjustments, and related stress issues like depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, or substance abuse. As a coach I help individuals clarify their goals, find direction, and create actionable steps to achieve meaningful progress in their personal and professional lives.

Through my several decades of experience as a business professional, I’ve witnessed numerous clients, professionals, and coworkers struggle with stress related conditions resulting from their jobs, relationships, or cultural issues. I decided to help address the severe lack of preventive and ongoing mental health solutions in Japan for said issues. To that end, I am degreed with a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, licensed as a counselor, and engaged as a therapist, counselor and coach. I am experienced as a crisis counselor and in non-crisis counseling and therapy. My main modalities are Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Person Centered Therapy (PCT). I have certifications in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Psychological First Aid (PFA).

My family loves good food, travel, and hanging out with our friends. I enjoy various forms of exercise, and practicing a number of the mindfulness practices I recommend to my clients.

Message to clients

My philosophy and approach with therapy is that we work as a team to address the challenges you face, such as workplace, relationship, or cultural stress related trauma, depression or anxiety. I believe in building trust by meeting you where you are. I believe in us having a committed relationship, where we will explore your challenges, identify your strengths, and work collaboratively to create meaningful steps toward the life you want. I am happy to counsel or gently point you in the right direction, but you will be steering the ship.

A foundation of my approach is Person Centered Therapy (PCT). Through PTC I provide a supportive, nonjudgmental environment. Clients therefore feel safe to explore their thoughts and emotions, thus achieving personal growth through finding their own solutions. Another core therapy method I work with is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which combines mindfulness and values, so clients can manage unworkable thoughts and identify/work with what’s important to them, bringing meaning to life.

Therapy, counseling, and coaching all aim to support personal growth and well-being but can differ in focus and approach. Therapy more often addresses past experiences, emotional challenges, and mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, or trauma. Counseling often focuses on more on current life challenges, such as stress, grief, or career decisions, and provides practical support and guidance to help individuals navigate these situations effectively. Coaching tends to be future-oriented, more directive, and has a stronger emphasis on goal-setting and performance improvement.
