Professional statement

Emily Flavin is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor located in Warwick, RI who welcomes teenagers, young adults, and adults and LGBTIA/queer identified people into her mental health practice. Many of Emily’s clients have been through trauma or other challenging life experiences. This might impact their sense of overall and general safety, resulting in anxiety, depression, difficulty managing emotions, relationships, and overall sense of well being.

When working with Emily, clients learn more about their unique personal attributes and strengths and how to support themselves in their mental health journey. Sessions are focused on the client’s needs, with an emphasis on building therapeutic tools and developing alternative perspectives to utilize in their lives outside of sessions. Emily works from a psychodynamic model and utilizes therapy modalities such as Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS), Polyvagal Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Clients gain perspective about their personal narratives and learn to approach past trauma with a self-compassionate lens. such Lastly, Emily works with clients to stay present in the moment and to observe their thoughts, feelings and experiences with curiosity rather than judgment.

Emily earned a Master’s degree in Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy from San Francisco State University. She has over 10 years of experience working as a therapist, with a strong belief that her clients hold the key to unlocking health, joy, and meaning. She enjoys providing them with the guidance they need to locate these experiences to make the meaning they seek in their lives in a non judgmental and supportive setting.

Message to clients

Welcome. Thank you for your interest in my practice. I am aware it is a challenging process to find a therapist you feel comfortable and connected with to begin to share your personal stories with. My aim is to provide a space free of judgement, a space where trust and safety can be built, not assumed. The therapeutic relationship is one that is built over time, naturally, never awarded by the nature of the labels in the dynamic of therapist/client. Sure, it is a place to start, but it takes time.

I must say, I truly love what I do, and feel very fortunate for this. There is always some sense of novelty in the honor I feel by the safety and trust others put in my hands when they share space in therapy with me. And as well, in the beautiful growth I observe others attain for themselves over time while I support their work in therapy.

My hope is you take some time to read my professional statement, as it does explain me, generally, as a Clinician/Therapist. And if you have any questions at all, please feel free to reach out to me. I am always happy to answer any questions about myself, my practice, or if I am able to help in any other way.

Thank you so much for your time.

Be well. And best of luck in seeking out services that best meet your needs.
