Professional statement

Jill Maling is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Deerfield, Illinois (about 25 miles north of Chicago). She is currently working virtually. She works with adolescents and adults of all ages. Many of Jill's clients come to her when they are experiencing depression, anxiety, grief or loss, separation or divorce, trying to heal from childhood abuse, or feeling "stuck" in their lives. Jill is especially passionate about working with parents of young children, helping them to both better understand expectable age-appropriate behaviors, and also to learn techniques that can help them develop happier and healthier relationships with their children.

Jill primarily works psychodynamically with her clients. She works with the interplay between the conscious and unconscious, the past and the present, and the relationship between her clients and herself. This approach enables clients to develop insight into their behaviors, thereby making healthier choices in their lives.

Jill's style is warm, interactive and non-judgmental. When working with her clients, she will listen carefully to the client's story, gently exploring with comments and questions. Her aim is to develop a comfortable rapport in a supportive and safe setting. As trust develops, clients are able to go deeper into their issues, and begin to make the necessary connections through which they can heal.

Jill Maling received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Michigan, and her Masters in Social Work from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Jill is the lyricist and co-producer of two original albums for children, "Music is Magic" and "Make Happy!" She is also the author of "Parenting Pros(e): Poems, Pearls and Pointers for Parents."

Message to clients

Life doesn't come with an instruction book.

Under the best of circumstances we just do the best we can to figure it all out. But what if a person has experienced extraordinary things: Childhood abuse, bullying, heartbreak, divorce, illness, the pandemic, loss of a job or a loved one or a dream? What happens then?

My name is Jill Maling, and I've been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice for 32 years. I treat adolescents and adults of all ages, and help parents of young children strengthen their understanding of, and competence with, parenting techniques that will result in happier and healthier relationships within the family.

I'm committed to creating a safe and comfortable environment for my clients, both physically and emotionally. A triggering event might explain why my clients reach out when they do, but it doesn't explain why their usual coping methods aren't working. I primarily work my psychodynamically with my clients, helping them make connections between the past and present. As we explore, we also discover healthier coping strategies. It is a process of growth and healing, and I consider it an honor to accompany my clients on their journey.

If you are looking for support because you realize your life is not in the place you'd like it to be, or you are in pain, or feeling stuck, I hope you will contact me. I'd like to listen. I'd like to help.
