Professional statement

Joellen Walter is a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 5 years of professional experience in the mental health setting. Many of her clients struggle to control intense emotions like anxiety or depression, often resorting to addictions or substance use to self-medicate. They may lash out at loved ones, not because they want to hurt them, but because anger is the only way they feel they can express how they’re feeling.

Joellen practices two trauma-informed therapy modalities called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and Brainspotting, which leverage the brain’s natural function to help clients overcome distressing emotions and painful memories. Joellen’s approach to therapy also draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). She helps clients establish healthy ways to regulate their emotions and teaches them mindfulness techniques that they can use throughout their daily lives to bring more awareness to how they’re feeling. Her style is honest and caring, and she has personal experience with mental health challenges and addiction that enhances her empathy for her clients.

Joellen earned a Master’s degree from Argosy University and holds certificates in EMDR therapy and Brainspotting therapy. She previously worked as a personal trainer for 15 years, where she worked with many individuals to build healthy and complete lives. Her therapy dog, Jeff, often makes appearances in sessions, and together Joellen and Jeff have positively impacted numerous clients by supporting them as they work towards healthier lives.

Message to clients

Asking for help is one of the hardest endeavors I ever did. I became a therapist late in life because I had a lot of personal work to do myself. Growing up in a small town in Wisconsin I was taught that I didn't need help if I applied myself more. As a young adult I reached a crossroads and couldn't imagine the rest of my life being so hard. After getting sober, I started therapy to deal with trauma, anxiety and anger. It has taught me there is so much more to life. My therapists in life have inspired me to help others in the same way. I went back to school so I can help and not hurt people in life. I believe we all do grow in our own way.

Finding a professional who was straight forward and honest with my issues was crucial in becomeing a content adult. Life has really become about the journey and not about the destination. If you are looking for someone to help navigate mood disorders, addictions, healthy lifestyles or even just the daily ups and downs of life, then I might be a good person contact. I continue to work on my journey so I can be of maximum service to my clients. Life doesn't have to be hard and everyone can learn to thrive!
