Professional statement

Clark Miller is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in private practice on Oregon’s north coast. He works with all ages and behavioral health needs, specializing in complex needs, for example individuals and families impacted by stress and mood disturbance along with substance use, or parents with children impacted by trauma, school problems and disruptive behaviors. He is especially committed to helping clients frustrated by histories of inadequate benefit from services by taking a new look at diagnoses, needs, and new approaches.

He draws on more than 15 years direct practice experience in diverse settings with children, families and adults and with specialized training for adoptive families and advanced competence as a published substance use expert. Trained originally as a research scientist, his practice is grounded in informed commitment to therapies that work, as established by research – therapies that most importantly are personalized patient-centered interactions that feel right: understanding, trustful, unrushed, collaborative, and empowering. Evidence-based therapies that lead us to say, "Healing is Relational".

Clark’s therapy style is collaborative and client-centered, focused on developing your confidence, insight, and effective strategies for change – empowering rather than directing it. Clients at Clark Miller Therapy experience the uncompromised integrity of personalized, collaborative, individualized therapy with the skills of a licensed, published substance use and behavioral health expert.

Clark Miller has training and degrees in philosophy, research ecology, and clinical social work. Practice settings have been diverse, ranging from community mental health, residential programs, and medical settings, to state psychiatric hospital. Outside of his therapy practice, self-care and community involvement include the hiking trails and waters of the north coast, also work for social justice and change, change and accountability in healthcare, and environmental restoration.

Message to clients

I know from working with clients of all ages that starting therapy can bring up feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, even discomfort, for someone new to therapy or for those whose experiences have been disappointing or difficult.

I also know from experience – and research – that the most important factors contributing to success in therapy are not the specific therapy approaches or strategies but instead development of a sense of safety, trust, alliance and collaboration in the interaction.

That’s why my initial aim and work with clients is to establish that foundation that is the basis for progress on your specific concerns and goals. And that’s why I offer an initial 30 – 40 minute meeting, or “screening” at no charge – to provide prospective clients the opportunity to decide whether the therapy style and my background are a good fit.

For clients in my area, I always encourage in-person therapy, due to the advantages over therapy by distance. I also recognize the range of circumstances that can justify use of telehealth - therapy sessions by video connection - and offer therapy by telehealth as needed, including when adequate local services are simply not available.

Whether in-person or by telehealth, clients find the client portal for Clark Miller Therapy easy to use, including to schedule their own sessions. Questions, concerns, billing and additional details are all things we can discuss in the initial screening or by secure (encrypted) messaging once you enroll through the client portal.
