Professional statement

Dr. Livia Freier is a Clinical Psychologist in Rhode Island who specializes in anxiety and depression, as well as ADHD, adjustment difficulties, eating disorders, and couples/marriage conflicts. Additionally, Dr. Freier works with clients who would like to gain a strong sense of self and build self-confidence both long-term and situational. Her practice is open to individuals, couples, and families. Dr. Freier also works with young adults and their families. Her neuroscience research is affiliated with Brown University and her practice is located within close walking distance of the Brown University campus and RISD. Clients can book in-person appointments as well as teletherapy sessions.

Clients who visit Dr. Freier often feel stuck and want to identify proactive ways to bring about change. Common problems include coping with depression and intense stress; panic attacks; personal, academic, or professional challenges; relationship conflict; and adjusting to mental health or neurocognitive diagnosis (e.g, ADHD). It is her aim to help clients understand the root causes of the problem and facilitate effective coping strategies. Psychoeducation plays a significant role in her approach. Clients improve existing relationship dynamics and build self-resilience in order to foster lasting, impactful change. She uses evidence-based interventions, including cognitive-behavioral techniques (such as CBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy, and neuroscience education. Facilitating an understanding of our behaviors, emotions, and relationships is the first step in identifying our needs as well as unhealthy patterns. Dr. Freier gives her patients the tools to externalize their emotions and set boundaries with compassion. Her academic background is in clinical psychology and neuroscience.

Dr. Freier lived in the UK, Germany, and Spain. Sessions are offered in English, German, and Spanish. She looks forward to working with you. For more information please book a free phone consultation or visit the MindWell Psychology website.

Message to clients

My role as a psychologist is to provide you with the tools that will allow you to enhance coping and identify the root causes of your emotional discomfort and behavioral challenges. I work with individuals who are committed to overcoming self-doubt, improving communication, and reframing limiting beliefs. Most of my patients have an analytical mind and like to understand themselves deeply. Others are just beginning to explore therapy. I have a passion for working with clients who have a genuine desire to break with old patterns and want to gain confidence in themselves. My approach to couples counseling is active, pragmatic, and solution-focused, with the aim to build more loving relationships and move past unhealthy dynamics quickly.

Getting started with therapy can be daunting but the result of prolonged inaction, more often than not, is that our self-esteem suffers and we wonder whether change is even possible. I help my patients to build a strong sense of self to overcome fear-based decision-making, people-pleasing, and avoidance behaviors. In therapy, we will identify your needs, learn coping tools for anxiety, and discuss setting boundaries for healthy relationships. My goal is for my patients to live authentically, unapologetically, and with great compassion in their relationships. In my couples' work, I promote open communication, autonomy, connection, and emotional transparency.
