Professional statement

Marla Feinberg has been practicing since 1992. She is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in Portland, Oregon where she works remotely and welcomes adults who live in Oregon who are looking for help getting unstuck from their relational patterns. Her clients have often had previous therapy where they learned why they do what they do, but that has not helped them to change their behavior. Many of her clients have had childhood trauma in its different forms and may be getting triggered easily in relationships, or they find they are repeating unsatisfying patterns.

Marla works from a Trauma informed Attachment based lens, using knowledge from Neurobiology on how change happens. Many behaviors make sense when you look at them from that perspective. An example of this is the Fight, Flight or Freeze responses that are wired into all mammals for survival. Some people become enraged, some want to run away, and others might find themselves unable to talk coherently, as if their brain was frozen or paralyzed. Once we understand that current behavior is often based on past experiences of feeling unsafe, uncomfortable, or shame, they start to make more sense. Children often conclude that they are unlovable or unworthy, so part of the treatment is undoing negative self beliefs that are still operating in the adult.

Marla is curious, warm, and interactive. She uses EMDR, mindfulness techniques and body responses to emotions (often overlooked in "talking" therapy) as ways to explore the parts of ourselves in the moment. Marla tries to help people have experiences in the session that lead to positive change, which is different than insight alone.

Message to clients

I am highly trained, very experienced, passionate about my work and committed to my clients. You will find that I am down to earth, authentic and very much “myself.” Although I am not authoritative, I can be a strong presence for people, standing up for them when they aren’t able to stand up for themselves. I am warm, interactive and quiet when necessary. Observant and curious about your experience, I am also thoughtful, intuitive and not afraid to be wrong. I think I strive to be the kind of therapist I would want to see!

I can be irreverent and feel humor is an important connection. I am very open and comfortable talking about any subject, including things you may feel are difficult to bring up. I’m sensitive to feelings of shame, embarrassment and shyness. I welcome an interactive relationship that includes your input into our work.
