Professional statement

Clientele:

My practice is best suited to work with college age, young adult, and middle-aged adults in individual psychotherapy.

My Therapy Approach:

My theoretical orientation is integrative: psychodynamic-interpersonal, multicultural, humanistic, and existential. At times, I will incorporate cognitive or behavioral interventions for shorter-term goals (e.g., completing a major work project, mindfulness exercises to address anxiety). I offer a flexible approach that is at times non-directive, and at other times, more active. I also tend to emphasize the therapeutic relationship, which has been found to be a consistent therapeutic predictor of successful therapy outcomes in the psychotherapy research literature.

Logistics:

Therapy is generally one day per week by videotherapy via Google Meet. I only meet clients in remote teletherapy and plan to resume in-person sessions in 2023.

Message to clients

In working with me, we will collaborate to develop our own relationship, which I will model and nurture as a safe space for you to explore, gain insights, and practice new ways of being that you can apply to your relationships in the outside world. I strive to act as a sounding board, a safe haven, or a fellow traveler who can forewarn potential pitfalls and miss-turns that await you, and at times, a coach or cheerleader to encourage you.

Therapy sessions are 45 minutes and generally meet weekly. In the first (i.e., intake) session, I will start with a quick review the electronic paperwork and review the nature and limits of confidentiality. Then I will ask what primary issue, problem, or topic brought you to initiate therapy with me. I might respond with specific follow-up questions or facilitate exploration, depending on the nature of the concern. In the second half of the first session, I will typically ask standard questions to get to know you and to elaborate on your responses to electronic forms. After that, what you bring to the therapy work will largely guide our sessions.

I can neither solve your problems, nor can I change your life circumstances—but I can offer hope, support, and a safe space to work through them to become a person you hope to be.
