Professional statement

As a therapist with experience in substance abuse and addiction, Matt specializes in working with adults experiencing active addiction and early recovery from addiction, as well as family members and loved ones who are affected by someone's drinking or substance use. In addition to these areas, Matt also helps people experiencing issues related to Anxiety, Depression, Grief, Men's Issues, Anger Management, and other Interpersonal Issues.

Matt focuses on helping clients to promote acceptance, which can be through a traditional talk therapy session, setting goals, practicing mindfulness, or using EFT Tapping to create a deeper understanding of recurring issues. He also approaches client work through an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy approach, which is a mindfulness-based style, and Internal Family Systems, which explores the various parts within one's personality.

Matt strives to provide all clients with a safe and non-judgmental space. He believes in working towards acceptance of the self and incorporates this value in client work. In addition to meeting clients in Atlanta, Matt is also available for sessions online through a private, HIPAA-compliant TeleMental Health platform. Matt is currently accepting new clients for private pay, as well as clients in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield and Aetna.

Message to clients

As a mindfulness based therapist, I think one of the most important aspects of therapy is to explore what comes up in the present moment. What this looks like is that for whatever issue you are struggling with, I hope to apply mindfulness to it in order to raise an intentional awareness of what is going on. This may involve turning your attention and noticing what your body feels like, or observing the interpersonal dynamic between me as the therapist and you as the client. I believe that allowing yourself to feel discomfort can lead to personal growth and tolerance, much in the way that physical exercise leads to greater endurance and strength.

I strive to incorporate curiosity about what you are struggling with, as opposed to focusing on what you should be doing differently. I believe that behaviors, thoughts, and emotions are all valid and come up for a reason. One of the primary purposes of therapy is to understand the function of these experiences and look at them objectively, without requirements or expectations that they change.

My hope for any of my clients is that therapy be a challenging yet comfortable process, and one that raises your awareness outside of sessions. If you are interested in learning how to create this perspective for yourself, please feel free to reach out to me.
