Melissa Micnhimer is a Licensed Professional Counselor located in Lakewood, CO. Melissa enjoys helping adults to recognize their personal strengths and to feel good about themselves. Often, clients work with Melissa because they are overwhelmed and exhausted from people-pleasing or perfectionistic tendencies that are no longer sustainable. This often comes with lower self-esteem, anxiety, stress, and depression. Melissa helps her clients overcome difficult emotions, including anxiety, and reconnect with an authentic version of themselves. She specializes in helping clients process through traumatic experiences and move forward with their lives.
Melissa practices a trauma-informed, evidence-based therapy modality called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). During this therapy, the therapist supports the client as they think through painful memories. By using the brain’s natural processes, clients place these painful memories in the past context so their negative symptoms decrease as they learn that they are no longer in harm’s way. Melissa also teaches clients grounding, relaxation, or self-care strategies to use when they feel overwhelmed. When appropriate, and as requested, Melissa can incorporate spiritual or Christian concepts into therapy with clients who might benefit from Christian counseling.
Melissa earned a Master’s degree from Colorado Christian University. She has nearly five years of experience working in the mental health field and is passionate about helping clients feel understood without the fear of judgment or criticism. She aims to build a strong, respectful relationship with her clients as they make their way through their mental health journey.
