Professional statement

Melissa Wetherington is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in New Jersey, who works with teens and adults. Many of her clients feel stressed, anxious, and overwhelmed in their daily lives or relationships. They may have faced difficult experiences, such as a traumatic event, which causes them to feel fearful, anxious, or depressed. They seek therapy because they would like to find a more comfortable way of living without emotional overwhelm.

Melissa’s approach is rooted in evidence-based practices, which means that the ways that she works with clients are proven by science in being effective. She often uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which focuses on helping clients understand how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected, so that they can begin to make positive changes. She also uses mindfulness techniques, which has many benefits to daily living, including reducing stress and improvements in focus, mood, self-esteem, and sleep.

Melissa focuses on ensuring that her clients see real progress: she works with her clients on identifying what changes in their lives they want to make and then uses different therapy techniques to help them effectively make those changes. Her style is warm, non-judgmental, and authentic. This helps facilitate the process of change in clients. A trauma-informed therapist, Melissa is sensitive to the influence of past experiences on present challenges and works closely with clients to reframe the narrative of their life in a way that increases self-confidence and compassion. Melissa’s priority in starting with a new client is ensuring that they feel safe, heard, and like an equal partner in the therapeutic process. She offers the convenience of remote sessions to make therapy easier for her clients to access.

Message to clients

You are so brave for even considering starting therapy. I know how difficult it can be because I’ve done it myself several times. I know the fear and vulnerability that you feel. I am here to tell you that, yes, therapy is tough AND you can still do it and make the positive changes that you want to make. There won’t necessarily be the “right” time in your life for it and you may have even found yourself putting it off for a while. It's completely worth the risk and will help you to grow as a person. I feel delighted when I see my client's growth and we are able to celebrate it together.

Therapy is a transformational experience that will help you. Clients often seek my help due to difficulty with anxiety, depression, relationships, and stress. Many have experienced trauma, so I approach therapy with sensitivity to these experiences and work on creating a safe, warm, and non-judgmental space. This often helps clients to feel more at ease and open to sharing their intimate thoughts and feelings. From this space, I can better help my clients by using different therapy techniques and providing them with feedback, tools, and resources. I believe that in order to be an effective therapist, I need to continue to grow personally and professionally, therefore, I often do trainings, readings, and consultation with other professionals. Please feel free to reach out for a free consult, so we can chat further.
