Professional statement

Dr. Miranda Altman is a psychologist and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker based in Providence, Rhode Island. Miranda has worked with a broad-based client population, including those transitioning to college, work-life balance, divorcing couples, grief and loss, life span changes, and relationship issues. Dr. Altman approaches her work with clients as a partnership. Clinical interests include mood disorders, depression, post-partum, general anxiety, social anxiety, existential anxiety, OCD, trauma, body dysmorphia, and self-harming behaviors. Therapy sessions promote self-understanding, self-acceptance, and resilience using insight-and skills-based approaches. (CBT, ACT, narrative, and emotion-focused) Dr. Altman anchors the importance of mindful awareness while examining core beliefs about the self, others, and the cultures in which we exist.

Having served as the director of counseling at a university, Dr. Altman is keenly aware of students' present-day concerns. The usual challenges relate to greater self-sufficiency, making new friends, and balancing social engagement and academic rigor. Students also come into therapy searching for meaning and a greater sense of self and identity. Dr. Altman is a certified mediator in couple conflict resolution. She can consult with you to determine whether this approach suits your concerns.

Dr. Altman offers both in-person office appointments, as well as Zoom meetings.

Message to clients

Hi,

If you are reading this message, you are probably considering engaging in counseling. I am collaborative by nature, understanding that therapy needs to align with who you are and how you express yourself. The nature of free will underscores the work that I do with clients. Each client who walks through my door is viewed as unique. I am adept at listening to your narrative. Expressions of emotional pain take different forms and presentations. I respect your lived experiences and what you share with me. Sometimes exploring the past is relevant to understanding our present concerns, but this has to resonate with you. Throughout our work, I check in with you to ensure our direction feels relevant.

I provide a safe space in which you can explore themes that are keeping you stuck in your current distress. Feeling empowered to make changes in your life or relationship, can create hopefulness. I work with both individuals and couples. Feel free to reach out with any questions you have.

Best,

Miranda Altman, Psy.D., LICSW, MSW
