Professional statement

Dr. Nicholas Canby is a licensed clinical psychologist who works with adults and couples navigating life’s challenges — whether that means healing from trauma, working through relationship struggles, exploring questions of meaning or identity, or integrating experiences with psychedelics or meditation. His style is warm, thoughtful, and collaborative, creating a space where clients feel supported and understood.

Dr. Canby’s approach is grounded in evidence-based therapies while always being tailored to the unique needs and goals of each person. He draws from acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), trauma-focused approaches, and integrative behavioral couple therapy (IBCT), a method that helps partners build empathy, connection, and deeper understanding. His work is rooted in the belief that therapy isn’t just about addressing pain — it’s also about fostering growth, clarity, and a more fulfilling life.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Canby is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Brown University, where he teaches and researches topics related to mindfulness, senses of self, and psychedelic-assisted therapy. He offers online therapy for individuals and couples across Rhode Island and other PsyPACT participating states, providing flexible care in a secure virtual setting.

Message to clients

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and it’s completely normal to have questions or uncertainties about the process. My hope is to offer a space where you feel heard, supported, and met with curiosity and care — not judgment. Whether you’re coming to therapy feeling stuck, overwhelmed, in pain, or simply wanting to better understand yourself, we’ll work together at a pace that feels right for you.

I believe therapy works best when it feels collaborative and personalized. I’ll bring tools and perspectives from evidence-based approaches, but I’ll also want to get to know you — your values, your story, your strengths. My hope is that therapy can not only help ease suffering, but also create room for growth, insight, and greater connection to what matters most in your life.

If you’re considering working together, I’d be glad to connect for a free 15-minute consultation to answer any questions and see if it feels like a good fit. I look forward to hearing from you.
