Phillip Lowry is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and 200 hour certified Yoga Teacher. He provides a holistic and cultural approaches to improving his clients' mental health and overall wellness.
Phillip uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, mindfulness, and yoga to help clients struggling with anger management, anxiety, mood disorders, and trauma (yoga is optional for clients who are interested). He combines traditional therapeutic counseling with meditation, concentration, and ethical guidelines that are emphasized in yoga practices to help his clients understand their thoughts and feelings, as well as the consequences surrounding them.
Phillip truly believes in the importance of cultural competency within his practice, allowing cultural differences to enhance his relationship with his clients through respect and understanding. Phillip's past work experience includes clinical counseling at a community mental health center, and working as a social worker for the State of RI.
Cultural competency - Understanding clients from their background and identity, instead of the therapist's background. Sees clients who are frustrated by the power/privilege in institutions, challenges in college or in not getting promoted at work, etc. Has particular experience working with clients in the African, African American, and Latino communities
Trauma - Includes arrest trauma, legal challenges, emotional trauma from relationships; work with couples and families struggling through difficulties; uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, breath work, and mindfulness (does not specialize in trauma from sexual assault, robberies, terminal illness)
Depression and mood disorders - Providing support and promoting healing of hopelessness, low motivation and energy, sadness, irritability, sleep disturbance, and loss of interest and pleasure in life
Adolescent work - Working with adolescents, teenagers, and parents on social, academic, and/or emotional challenges throughout teenage years; addressing anxiety, family conflicts, peer relationships, school stress, transition to college, social media pressures, self-esteem, hopelessness about the future, emotional dysregulation
Anxiety - Coping with excessive worry, nervousness, or stress; intense discomfort in social settings (social anxiety); sudden and intense feelings of panic (panic disorder)
Anger management - Addressing sudden outbursts of anger or sustained resentment; developing healthy anger expression and outlets
