Professional statement

Dr. Renee Obstfeld is a licensed psychoanalyst located in Greenwich Village. She specializes in treating addictions and trauma, as well as helping people navigate stressful life transitions. Renee's focus in treatment is on reclaiming and defining one's internal resources and strengths, resulting in a greater sense of agency and control over one's life and less reliance on self-defeating patterns. This work often involves working with embodied beliefs, beliefs that can range from inhibiting our potential to outright self destructiveness.

In addition to practicing psychoanalytic psychotherapy, Renee is a licensed creative arts therapist, trained in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). These approaches facilitate recovery from trauma by accessing material that may not be readily available for conscious, verbal recall. Drawing on resources from a variety of modalities--specifically those that engage the body and activate personal symbols--facilitates recovery from acute distress and post-traumatic symptoms in the short term. In the longer term, treatment leads to deep, structural change and resilience in the face of future challenges.

Renee has treated individuals for over 30 years and is dedicated to ensuring each client’s experience is personalized and engaging. She welcomes anyone who wants to break free of self-defeating patterns and habits to contact her if they would like to learn more about her work.

Message to clients

My practice is devoted to helping people feel more in control of their lives and their actions. Often, I see people who struggle with shame that precludes curiosity or understanding, and locks them in self defeating cycles. These symptoms and patterns are problematic, confusing, and painful. However, exploration in treatment consistently reveals their origins as adaptations to stressful early relationships or situations. I adhere to a trauma-focused treatment that allows clients to reconnect with their inner resources and develop more effective coping strategies. Whether or not one enters treatment identifying a discrete traumatic event, I find this modality best addresses the inner struggles and disconnect experienced by so many. I use a variety of techniques to help people discover a more embodied, alive, secure way of being.
