Professional statement

Terra Hailand is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor located in Astoria, NY. Many of her clients experience anxiety, including incessant worry or overwhelming fear. They might also feel depressed or resort to unhealthy coping behaviors to alleviate their emotional anguish. Terra also helps clients to improve their self-esteem and to decrease the stress in their lives.

Terra helps her clients by teaching them to utilize adaptive ways of coping when faced with distress. She creates a sense of mutual trust with her clients so they can begin to explore what’s holding them back from feeling joyful, connected, and fulfilled. Clients benefit from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), as well as psychodynamic therapy, when unpacking their past trauma and adverse experiences.

Terra is a strong advocate for accessible mental health and was drawn to becoming a therapist from an early age. She strives to address injustices within vulnerable communities and help individuals to find safe, compassionate spaces to talk about their experiences.

Message to clients

I offer an empathetic and nonjudgmental environment to allow the opportunity for growth, empowerment, validation, and normalization of feelings. I utilize an integrative approach to fit the needs of my clients. I believe we are all unique and there is no uniform approach to therapy. I view a therapeutic relationship as a working partnership in which I meet you where you are and work with you to define your own goals for treatment.

I was drawn to the field of mental health at an early age due to my own experiences with emotional struggles and pain. I have seen how much mental health impacts people’s behaviors and the world as a whole. I knew I could use my experiences to help those who are also struggling to figure life out. I have many years of experience providing therapy in various community-based settings, including outpatient treatment programs, hospitals, and correctional- based environments. I aim to address injustice among vulnerable and marginalized client populations and provide a safe space for people to gain insight, learn adaptive ways of coping, and ultimately thrive. I consistently take continuing education courses in order to improve competency and learn new therapeutic techniques as a provider.
