Therapists Providing Psychodynamic Therapy in Rhode Island

Psychodynamic therapy is based on Freud’s psychoanalytic theory that thoughts and behaviors are influenced by our unconscious mind and past experiences. Through collaborative conversation, clients deepen their awareness and understanding of the unconscious mind. Unlike traditional psychoanalysis, therapists often meet with clients once weekly over several months rather than several years.

Find therapists in Rhode Island who are trained in Psychodynamic Therapy below. All providers have been vetted by the Zencare team for clinically rigorous, quality care. Visit their profiles to watch an introductory video and book a free initial call to find a good fit!

I have worked throughout my academic and professional career to make myself accessible as a person and psychiatrist. I work very hard to create an environment where you can speak openly and honestly about your life and the things that are preventing you or your child from being the best "you." I want to help you feel confident and more able to do and get the things that are important to you out of life. I know it may be difficult to face personal struggles (anxiety, sadness, loss, grief, change, relationship distress, identity struggles, etc.), yet I will work to create a caring space where we can work together to assist you to access your talents, help you to realize or remember the abilities you have, as well as learn new ways to manage stress to grow and flourish. I will work with you to create an individual (and or family) treatment plan. If you are struggling with an illness that would benefit from medication, we can discuss options that may benefit your particular situation/diagnosis. I also provide therapy and medication (if needed) in one appointment if that is more appropriate for your circumstance. What is most important is to feel comfortable and heard, and I will do everything I can to make our work together collaborative.

For individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, and/or adjusting to a new situation: Transitions are a standard part of life, but that does not make the process an easy or comfortable one. Talking about the issues, the stumbling blocks, and the obstacles can make them more surmountable. Whether it’s adjusting to school, to a changing relationship, or to a difficult work experience, people can benefit from talking with a therapist and getting support.

I know it can be very difficult to come into a stranger's office and talk about the problems that you face. So much of the time, we're expected to project an image of ourselves as successful, happy, funny, smart, tough. But I would encourage you to give yourself permission to not have to face your worries alone. This is a place where you can talk openly and not feel judged. Together, we can work towards identifying and changing the things that in your life that are keeping you from feeling your best.
For men: It's no secret that traditionally, men are much less likely than women to seek mental health care. Sometimes, even the idea of asking for help can conflict with strongly ingrained social norms about needing to be tough. A the same time though, so many of the issues that men face can be quite impairing to our functioning and disruptive to the relationships with the people we love the most.

A message to young adults: Therapy is a very important and sometimes difficult decision to make. For most of you who are as accomplished as you are, coming to someone and talking about things that you don't know how to figure out is even more difficult because you've gotten where you've gotten by being able to make things work on your own, and I really understand that. This is your safe space, a space for you to figure out what you want to accomplish; and my job is to work in collaboration with you to help you get where you want to go.

A message to parents: Being a parent is probably one of the hardest jobs that anyone's gotten or opted to take on, and caring about your children and making things work for them is your goal; realizing your children may need help, especially beyond that which you know how to give them is hard and talking to someone about that is also difficult. My job is to have us work together here, setting goals along with your child so that we work together in the same way to get things accomplished that you want as a family.

Therapy is an invitation to a different kind of relationship – it is all at once open and vulnerable while also reliable and purposeful. Of course, like any relationship worthwhile, it comes with its own set of challenges: Do we “click?” Are you learning something about yourself and the world around you through this time (both during and after a session)? Are we comfortable providing each other feedback? Are we doing the work of healing?

It is as much about what the therapist can offer and the ways in which they can validate your truth as it is what you would like to and are ready to bring to the table at your own pace.

As such, I see myself as the facilitator of this bold, empowering process – you take ownership of your decisions, including the positive ones that showcase your inherent power to engage in life in the best way possible for you.

I offer a safe and supportive environment for clients to examine and explore the challenges in their lives which have lead them to therapy. The goal of the therapeutic process is twofold: subjectively we seek an increased awareness of the underlying issues within the client's psyche and objectively we create a treatment plan to implement this self-knowledge into everyday action.

We're all blessed to be born into this life, and we have this one precious opportunity to develop ourselves. We all deserve to be loved and the place where love starts is self-love. The first and most important love is the love for yourself. We all deserve to feel safe and satisfied, and experience joy in our lives. When people come into therapy, they come in with pain, so the work is to move people from pain to peace, and the joy begins to emerge simply by removing that pain and finding peace. Some people are satisfied with finding peace, and that's wonderful; others may want more, and we can together work from that peaceful place to cultivate and realize their full potential. It's a wonderfully creative endeavor, and a beautiful way to live life.
