Dr. Cathleen Adams is pediatrician, adult psychiatrist and a child and adolescent psychiatrist who specializes in working with children, teens and adults of all ages. Dr. Adams has extensive experience caring for individuals with a variety of medical and psychiatric conditions including anxiety, depression, OCD and eating disorders. She is particularly passionate about helping teens and young adults navigate the unique challenges of college life as well as other major life transitions. Dr. Adams has experience caring for patients from a wide variety of ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic and religious backgrounds, and has a deep understanding of unique gifts and challenges our varied stories can bring.
Dr. Adams has worked extensively with children with complex medical and psychiatric conditions in a wide variety of settings. Most notably, she helped lead the development of the Inpatient Medical Psychiatric Program at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, where she was the founding medical director, as well as serving as an attending psychiatrist at the Hasbro Partial Hospital Program.
In addition to her extensive medical training, Dr. Adams is also a skilled therapist with training in a variety of psychotherapeutic modalities including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and psychodynamic psychotherapy. In addition, she has advanced training in couples and family therapy, and especially enjoys helping families feel more connected and strengthen family bonds. She has experience working with families who have gone or are going through separation or divorce. Many patients appreciate the convenience of seeing one physician who provides both therapy as well as medication management services.
Dr. Adams creates a warm, relaxed, respectful atmosphere that allows her patients to exhale and do the work necessary to reach their goals. She feels strongly that the work done in therapy allows patients to gain a better sense of themselves as individuals or families.
