Professional statement

Dr. Cathleen Adams is pediatrician, adult psychiatrist and a child and adolescent psychiatrist who specializes in working with children, teens and adults of all ages. Dr. Adams has extensive experience caring for individuals with a variety of medical and psychiatric conditions including anxiety, depression, OCD and eating disorders. She is particularly passionate about helping teens and young adults navigate the unique challenges of college life as well as other major life transitions. Dr. Adams has experience caring for patients from a wide variety of ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic and religious backgrounds, and has a deep understanding of unique gifts and challenges our varied stories can bring.

Dr. Adams has worked extensively with children with complex medical and psychiatric conditions in a wide variety of settings. Most notably, she helped lead the development of the Inpatient Medical Psychiatric Program at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, where she was the founding medical director, as well as serving as an attending psychiatrist at the Hasbro Partial Hospital Program.

In addition to her extensive medical training, Dr. Adams is also a skilled therapist with training in a variety of psychotherapeutic modalities including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and psychodynamic psychotherapy.  In addition, she has advanced training in couples and family therapy, and especially enjoys helping families feel more connected and strengthen family bonds.  She has experience working with families who have gone or are going through separation or divorce. Many patients appreciate the convenience of seeing one physician who provides both therapy as well as medication management services.

Dr. Adams creates a warm, relaxed, respectful atmosphere that allows her patients to exhale and do the work necessary to reach their goals. She feels strongly that the work done in therapy allows patients to gain a better sense of themselves as individuals or families. Dr. Adams is able to see patients throughout the states of RI and PA in the comfort of their home through her virtual practice. She looks forward to meeting you.

Message to clients

Sometimes it feels as though we are constantly being asked to put on a strong face and push through, no matter what the circumstances.  So rarely are we given the time to be present with our true self and just exhale.  Our lives are filled with demands and expectations that drain our emotional cup but never seem satisfied with what we have to offer.  This is your space.  This is your time.   Please take this hour a week to take care of you.  This is your time to grow and heal.  Your physical and emotional health is truly your most valuable asset.  Investing now will help you far outside of our sessions to achieve your goals.

Whether you are a high school student feeling the constant pressure to be perfect, a college student trying to make all the right decisions while trying to enjoy your college years, or a professional navigating career and family, your mental health is critically important.  We can work as a team to help you find your own success.  You are not alone.  My approach is flexible, using a range of medical and therapeutic tools, and adjusting to your specific needs and situation.

To Parents: Being a parent is our most important and most challenging job.  Each stage of our children’s development is a new adventure with its own unique twists and turns.  These challenges are only enhanced when your child is struggling with a mental illness. We will work together to support you and your child as we develop the very best evidence-based treatment plan so they can feel the joy of success.
