Professional statement

Dr. Annkatrine Gates is a Clinical Psychologist in Cambridge, MA who specializes in college and graduate student mental health, trauma, multicultural challenges, family issues, parenting, and relationships. She is particularly focused on working with families, individuals, or couples who are navigating the unique challenges that occur within stepfamilies. She also has extensive experience in college counseling and trauma, including sexual trauma, childhood trauma, and complex trauma.

Dr. Gates’ treatment approach is rooted in Family Systems and Psychodynamic Theory. Her sessions are individualized depending on her clients’ needs and goals. She believes strongly in the benefits of doing deep, long-term work to help her clients better understand how past experiences have shaped how they view and act in the world today. When working with clients with a history of trauma, Dr. Gates spends time identifying traumatic events and educating her clients on the psychological effects of those experiences. She is careful discussing the trauma in-depth before a client is ready. She instead focuses at first on how the effects of a traumatic experience continue to manifest in a client’s life. As a critical part of treating trauma, Dr. Gates helps her clients develop coping skills to mitigate the ongoing difficulty of surviving trauma.

Dr. Gates prioritizes making sure that all her clients feel seen and heard. She received her PsyD from William James College. Afterward, she completed a post-doctoral internship at Brandeis University’s Counseling Center and a post-graduate fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis. In addition to talk therapy, Annkatrine runs three groups: a grief support group, a stepmother support group, and a group for trauma survivors. She looks forward to meeting you.
