Professional statement

Cara Donahue is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker offering the ease of online therapy to adults in Connecticut, Florida and Massachusetts. People may start therapy feeling stuck, in pain from depression or anxiety, frustrated with their relationships, disconnected after a loss and no longer able to make sense of the world. Cara helps clients gain insight while teaching skills to manage intense feelings and responses in the body. Clients find paths to acceptance and renewal. It's her passion and purpose to guide clients on their journey skillfully, with care and compassion.

Using a holistic approach, Cara addresses clients' emotional, spiritual, mental and physical wellbeing. Instead of focusing on changing thoughts and feelings, Cara helps clients to accept them without judgment; to observe and engage them with curiosity. By reinforcing core values and intentions, alongside practicing skills to manage and decrease discomfort, clients start making changes without waiting to have the “right” thoughts and feelings. As a result, they report less distress and more fulfillment.

Cara works to ensure clients feel safe and respected, hoping to earn their trust. She co-creates an approach with clients to meet their unique needs, drawing from an eclectic academic background, her training in grief and trauma treatment, and energy healing modalities. She seeks client feedback along the way, in order to assess the process and make adjustments if needed.

Cara knows first-hand what it’s like to achieve a goal (whether a degree, a job, a relationship) and still feel unsure of one’s self. Like many of her clients, she’s experienced grief, and the challenge of rebuilding after life is forever changed. She is committed to the clients that live with unacknowledged loss. She is committed to making you feel seen, heard, hopeful and connected.

Message to clients

Let me start by saying this: you may hurt but you are not broken. You may find yourself at a crossroads - by choice, through an expected transition or unexpected loss - and you may feel uncertain. You may not know how to move forward. You may feel unmoored by unanswered questions. And just when you need connection the most, it may seem out of reach. When you're most vulnerable, you may feel you have to hide behind a front, in order to avoid judgment and protect others.

Standing there, you realize that whichever path you take you must leave the other behind. All changes, all choices bring an element of loss. Grief can be an especially painful and unchosen suffering. And all too often, invisible losses go unacknowledged and unsupported. You may find you carry the burden of anxiety, despair or constant stress that never seems to change. If you feel lonely, you deserve support and reason to hope.

I am committed to providing you with a connected and compassionate experience. I will help you to develop tools to safely manage stress and tolerate discomfort, so you can access new ways of making meaning for yourself. I ask that you invest in the process with me, be willing to practice small changes on the path towards a life better lived. Remember, practice makes possible™! I do hope you will schedule a consultation, and see if you feel the right connection to begin that journey with me. Thank you!
