Professional statement

Dr. Charles Dean is a Psychologist and Licensed Mental Health Clinician located in Jacksonville, FL. Dr. Dean specializes in supporting his clients to implement effective self-care practices. Many of his clients seek therapy when going through major life transitions, including the loss of a loved one, starting a new job, moving to a new city, or beginning or ending a relationship. He enjoys working with men and helping them find fulfillment and meaning. He also specializes in treating burnt out and compassion fatigue, which may result in addiction, substance abuse, or unhealthy relationships.

Dr. Dean draws from various therapy practices when working with clients. When helpful, he uses elements of Existential Therapy to encourage clients to think through what’s important for them and what they want to accomplish in their lives. He also utilizes Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) to help clients process traumatic events. Dr. Dean also brings in exercises from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), teaching clients how to avoid harmful cognitive distortions that lead to negative self-talk. In therapy with Dr. Dean, clients set goals for themselves and work towards those goals in each session by talking through their thoughts and feelings. Clients learn how to establish self-care practices that are authentic, effective, and easy to incorporate into their daily lives.

Dr. Dean earned his PsyD after over 10 years of therapy practice. He has extensive experience supporting clients and empowering them to seek fulfillment in their lives. He encourages clients to get out of their comfort zone and explore their stress reactions to find what works for them.

Message to clients

Therapy provides you with the unique opportunity to come out of your comfort zone and experience life in a more fulfilling way. Coming out of one's comfort zone can be challenging and anxiety provoking, but it is well worth the struggle when you see how much more fulfillment and freedom you have in your life at the end of therapy. My role is to help you interpret and help you make sense of the stressors that brought you to therapy. I will also work with you as you create new adaptive ways of coping that will lead to greater life fulfillment.

Working as a mental health professional for almost a decade my specialty is trauma, compassion fatigue, and professional burnout, but I also work with issues related to substance abuse, depression, anxiety, men’s issues, and pet loss. I also focus on self-care, which is a foundational piece for quality change.

My therapeutic style is warm, genuine, and direct. Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) has been my favorite therapeutic approach as it helps reprocess traumatic events that leads to a significant reduction of emotional distress caused by the negative images. EMDR has also been effective in treating other psychological issues, such as depression, anxiety, and phobias. I utilize other therapeutic approaches in my work, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solution Focused Therapy (SF). If you are ready to put in the work and make a quality change in your life call or email me for an appointment.
