Professional statement

David Cope is an Independent Licensed Clinical Social Worker based in Hancock, NH. His private practice is primarily telehealth with some availability for in person sessions at his home-based office. David works with teenagers to seniors offering individual, couples, group and family counseling. His clients are dealing with a broad range of issues including anxiety, depression, stress, self-esteem, life transitions, loss, trauma and relationship problems.

The foundation of David’s approach is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, an evidence-based approach that helps clients learn a new way to relate to thoughts, feelings and behavior patterns, allowing them greater freedom to live the life they want. David has studied many other schools of therapy over his 33 years as a counselor and uses whichever approaches best fit the needs of his clients. His 15 years working with the military community has given him specialized experience in helping clients overcome the debilitating effects of trauma.

David is also a trained mediator and has helped clients resolve seemingly insurmountable conflicts resulting in improved relationships. His mediation background informs his work with couples and families, helping them to improve their communication, conflict resolution skills and emotional connection.

David approaches clients' issues holistically, considering the physical, psychological and existential aspects of their life. David’s style is interactive, non-judgmental, down to earth and collaborative. He encourages clients to relate to themselves in a compassionate manner while learning new skills to make life’s challenges manageable as they move toward realizing their goals.

Message to clients

Life can be challenging! We all need help sometimes but it can be hard to ask for help. I want to make it easy. I’ve been a counselor for over thirty years and have helped people with many of the issues we all face at one time or another.

I believe the most important aspect of a counseling relationship is to establish a safe space where we can connect and I can truly listen to understand your concerns and goals. From there we can sort out the issues and come up with a plan to help you get on track with living the life you want.

I don’t filter what you are saying through any one school of thought. I have studied many types of therapy over the years and will suggest whatever approaches work best for your situation. My background in mindfulness meditation supports this deep listening and is also a simple tool that has been helpful to clients for managing stress and difficult thoughts and emotions.

I work at a pace that is comfortable for you, but I can typically identify core issues quickly so you can begin making positive life changes as soon as possible. I look forward to working together on the goals you care deeply about.
