Professional statement

In Derek’s personal journey to mental wellness, he noticed that it was challenging to find a therapist that felt safe, relatable and authentic. And he knows what it is like to be judged and misunderstood because of your identity and who you love. Using that, he will help you navigate your relationships, your past experiences, and the stresses of your daily life.

Derek’s approach is person-centered and emotionally-focused. Derek will work with you to identify your personal goals and explore a comprehensive way to reach those goals. Through this collaboration, you can expand your emotional intelligence to best support a healthy relationship with yourself and to establish meaningful and authentic relationships with others.

Message to clients

You should book a session with me if you want to explore the untapped parts of yourself that make you unique.I believe the qualities that make us different make us unique, and can be used to our advantage.

I am a black, queer, cis-gender male from Long Island. I currently live in Suffolk County, but I still love to explore modern art exhibits in NYC and discovering alternative and neo-soul artists. I hold a BA in psychology from C.W. Post and a Master of Social Work from Stony Brook University.

I am part of talented and vibrant team of therapists at Kip Therapy, the leading mental health provider for LGBTQ+ folx in New York City. I'm available to meet online and in-person (Columbus Circle, Manhattan), and our team works with most major insurances.
