Professional statement

Dr. Ellen Carni is a licensed Clinical Psychologist experienced in working with people at all stages of the lifespan. She enjoys and is very successful in helping individuals in early and mid-life transitions struggling with major decisions regarding relationships, careers, family lives, and existential problems of living. She also specializes in grief and loss, whether it be the loss of a loved one or loss of identity in the face of a diagnosis of chronic illness. She helps professionals, especially lawyers, manage stress and find work-life balance in high pressure careers.

Dr. Carni is also effective with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a psychotherapeutic technique that works with the brain to dissipate traumatic memories. She uses a combination of EMDR and insight-oriented therapy to help clients process trauma, PTSD, phobias, and performance anxiety.

Drawing on her expertise as a relational psychoanalyst, Dr. Carni works collaboratively and pragmatically to help you explore the influence of your early life on your personality, relationships and current stressful situations. She empowers you to become your own therapist so you have the tools to improve your relationships, career and overall life satisfaction.

People who work with Dr. Carni describe her as compassionate, a good listener, and easy to talk to about difficult concerns. She creates a respectful and nonjudgmental therapeutic space. Dr. Carni is passionate about practicing psychotherapy and looks forward to working with you at her Upper West Side office, conveniently located on West 86th Street.
