Professional statement

Gracie Landes is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Sex Therapist based in Brooklyn, NY. She works with people of all identities, backgrounds and relationship structures, with an affinity those of mixed culture/race and mixed orientation relationships. Clients come to Gracie with sexual or relationship problems, trouble adjusting to new stages of life, to repair a strained relationship with a family member, or improve dynamics at work. Gracie works with bright, creative people who refuse to be pigeonholed or settle for easy answers.

Gracie Landes has advanced training in Sex Therapy, Couples Counseling and Family Therapy. She uses Solution Focused Brief Therapy, a respectful form of inquiry that links what clients want with what they can do to get it.

Gracie's style is warm, enthusiastic, and practical. She provides an attuned collaborative relationship. When a client first comes in, she makes sure they feel welcome by addressing any concerns they have. She takes time to get to know clients outside of the context of their problems. She finds out what's most important to know and understand about them, then based on what she learns, gives customized feedback and suggestions.

Gracie Landes received her Masters degree in Counseling Psychology from JFK University in Pleasant Hill, CA. Before entering private practice she worked as a research scientist at New York University, and as a family therapist at The Family Institute of Pinole (California), the JFK University Counseling Center (Pleasant Hill, CA), STAND Against Domestic Violence (Concord, CA), and The Progress Foundation (San Francisco, CA). These experiences help her view clients' challenges from multiple points of view, always alert to new information to build solutions with. When not working, she studies yoga and Buddhism, enjoys photography, interior design and outdoor adventures.

Message to clients

My main method is Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SBFT), a way of working characterized by respect, curiosity, and precise conversation. I ask questions to learn what you want, what it means for you to have it, skills and resources that will help you get it. You'll describe these with such clarity that you can imagine goals being achieved - because they can. Each session should feel complete, and end feeling your time was well spent. The process takes only as many sessions as are useful to you, no more.

When couples want to develop proven communication skills, I use Pragmatic Experiential Therapy, based on what couples who succeed for the long run actually do differently from others. It combines communication and behavior skills with ways to stay calm enough to perform them when it's hard (like when you're tired or upset). This combination helps you develop genuine confidence.

If you come to me for sex therapy, there will be an educational component. I'll provide you with information about how human sexuality really works (it's more complex, nuanced and way more hopeful you than you think). I'll address any medical issues, and if needed, make referrals to other providers. I'll provide things to read, listen to, learn from and experiment with, so you can experience your sex life improving in unexpected, sustainable ways.

No matter what the challenge, I expect you’ll leave therapy will tools to master future problems without feeling like you have to depend on therapy.
