Professional statement

Hugh Allan is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker located in New York, NY. Hugh also holds a CASAC-T certification for substance abuse disorders and has completed the EMDR approved EMDR Basic Training through The Parnell Institute. Hugh works with a wide range of clients that live with past or present addictions, compulsions, anxiety and depression. Hugh's clients tend to be high functioning that have demanding careers. Hugh also works with individuals that are interested in cutting back or stopping their drinking or other substances.

In Addition to individual counseling, Hugh also offers Alcohol and Substance Abuse Support Groups with a CBT focus rather than based on 12-Step Principles. The group is for those seeking an alternative to 12- Step Groups.

Hugh’s approach partially comes from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), both of which provide clients with skills to break free from negative thought patterns and become aware of the connection between thoughts, feelings, and actions.

Hugh earned his Master’s degree from New York University. His style is collaborative and strengths-based, meaning that he emphasizes the role of each client’s individual strengths to achieve better mental health. With a previous career in business, Hugh brings real-life experience into the session and creates a genuine connection with each of his clients, helping them find fulfillment in their lives.

Message to clients

After working in finance as a trader for 20 years, I transitioned careers to become a therapist. I have always enjoyed helping others and wanted to pursue a career that focused on meaningful human connection.

I often use relational therapy when working with a client. In other words, I feel the connection between the therapist and the client is very important. One of my primary goals in therapy is to help my clients rediscover meaning in their lives and find their sense of purpose. I believe the best way for this to be achieved is by having a trusting and authentic connection between the client and the therapist. My hope is that when a client leaves a session, they want to come back because they felt a strong therapeutic alliance.

I welcome the opportunity to hear your story and help you address the reasons why you came to therapy.
