Professional statement

Jackson Melnick is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker who focuses on the needs of people in their late twenties and thirties, with an emphasis on college-aged students. Some of his clients are experiencing interpersonal crises, or require talk therapy as part of psychiatric care, but many of his clients simply find it beneficial to meet once a week and discuss what is going on in their lives. His clients come to see therapy as a way to develop a greater sense of freedom as they connect to and accept the values and desires that make them who they are, find more creative and healthier ways of living those values out in the world, and the ability to cast away thoughts and habits that are not resonate with who they are.

Drawing from a research and evidence-based approach to mental health care, Jackson uses a process of analytic reflection to help uncover what is true and what is false in your life, help you to realign with what is true, and ultimately to live out your values in the world with more confidence, grace and enthusiasm. His style is very conversational. He employs the Socratic method as a way of helping you learn more about yourself and the root causes of your emotional and mental strain, and sees therapy as a space to hear and discover your stories.

He is a lifelong learner and was once a student at Deep Springs College, Brown University (BA) and the University of Chicago (MA) where he studied CBT, DBT, ACT and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. As a social worker, he views each client as part of a dynamic, psychosocial whole. He has particular experience with the range of issues facing college students, and with anxiety, life transitions, suicidal ideation and self-harm in adolescents.

Message to clients

My primary role is as an advocate for your happiness. This begins by working to identify and advocate for your values, so that you can begin to feel that life has more meaning, and that you are more resilient and psychologically flexible when challenges emerge. I ask that you come to therapy with a willingness to be honest with yourself about what your wants and values might be, and an openness to the relief that accepting what your wants and desires are can offer. Change is often as simple as reframing what is already going on. I often find that clients come into therapy worried that therapy will induce them into making big life changes. That is sometimes true, but more often I find that a client's outer world doesn't have to change, but rather their relationship to their outer world does; therapy can help transform a difficult relationship to whatever is happening in your life into something much more life-giving and sustainable. I also do work with people experiencing more acute distress around issues related to anxiety, phobias, OCD, suicidal ideation, and interpersonal crises. Please do not hesitate to reach out an begin a conversation about what has been happening.
