Professional statement

Jackson Melnick practices psychotherapy with an office near Wayland Square in Providence, Rhode Island. Many clients come to him when they are experiencing interpersonal crises, and even more of his clients simply find it beneficial to meet once a week and discuss what is going on in their lives. His clients come to see therapy as a way to develop a greater sense of freedom: they connect to and accept their values and desires, find more creative and healthier ways of living those things out in the world, and cultivate the ability to cast away thoughts and habits that are not resonate with the life they want.

Jackson uses a process of analytic reflection to help you uncover what is true and what is false in your life, help you to realign with what is true, and ultimately to live out your values in the world with more confidence, grace and enthusiasm. His style is very conversational. He employs the Socratic method as a way to help you learn more about yourself and the root causes of your emotional and mental pain, and he sees therapy as a space to hear and discover your stories - not to change them.

He views each client as part of a dynamic, psychosocial whole. He affirms people of all faith, gender, sexual and cultural backgrounds and orientations.

He sees patients with OCD, and he has received training in I- OCD and ERP treatments.

Message to clients

I am able to help facilitate revelation of your self through an analysis of your desires.

I have studied institutionally at Deep Springs College, Brown University, Yale University and The University of Chicago. More importantly, I have had a lifelong interest in psychotherapy and as it presents across psychology, art and philosophy.

My training as a social worker in particular has helped me come to see the need for practical and straightforward ways to advocate for yourself in an antagonist and indifferent world. I have practiced clinical social work both in private practice and in adult and children's hospital emergency departments.

At worst, therapy creates a validating environment where you can find temporary relief from frustration, boredom or despair. At best, it initiates a process of understanding your self and in turn being given the opportunity to transform the life that self is in.

I do not try to fit you into some system of therapy that I have decided from a deluded sense of scientific expertise ought to work for you. Instead, I listen for what your desires are saying - from both your conscious and unconscious - and do my best to help you speak back to them. If a meaningful conversation starts, therapy becomes worthwhile. ACT, DBT, and CBT (behavioral therapies) might be used to promote self advocacy but only inasmuch as they are symbiotic with a self analysis.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch.
