Professional statement

John William Johnson, LMFT, is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, working primarily in California since 1981. He works with individuals and couples experiencing anxiety, depression and stress related issues. He also works with family owned businesses experiencing dysfunction. And his experience as a performance artist makes working with creatives a natural fit.

John´s primary question is “How can I help?” He has studied with many therapeutic disciplines, his approach is primarily somatic, ie, he tracks the whole body and how it expresses itself. Most people rely on their brains for much more than it is capable of. Many people have low emotional intelligence. So ruminating about their issues wastes huge amounts of energy, and causes the emotional body to have no outlet. This is often the cause of problems, so tracking facial expressions and supporting the ability to integrate your emotions with your thoughts is a huge part of staying sane and healthy. He also has a wealth of knowledge in the areas of nutrition, health and fitness.

The practice of psychotherapy has changed radically since 1981. People nowadays want guidance and tools to navigate the unhealthy world we have to confront. The primary modalities I use are Gestalt, Psychodynamics, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), Voice Dialog, the work of Eckhart Tolle, Byron Katie, and the Gottman Method.

My practice is currently online only. I primarily use video sessions. I offer invitations for best practices for living a sane and fulfilling life.

Message to clients

Hello, I look forward to working with you. The journey we take will be filled with valuable insights, and invitations on ways to optimize your daily living. I am here to serve and support your journey. Sometimes, to maximize what you receive during our limited time together, I will ask permission to intervene, especially with couples, to observe what I see happening and offer some alternative ways to express yourself.

In most cases I am wanting to be a witness to the soft underbelly of your life experiences. Sometimes the content isn´t as imperative as the emotional expression under the words.

We all have an inner purpose and an outer purpose. Our inner purpose as human beings is the same for everyone: to wake up. Without developing our inner purpose, outer purpose will be ruled by our ego, and ultimately will not serve humanity.
