Professional statement

Jolie Gorchov is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New York City and Los Angeles who sees adults, young adults, elders, and couples. She works especially well with clients in transition, creative individuals, those struggling with navigating relationships or singledom, and people working in demanding entertainment, corporate, and non-profit jobs.

Jolie believes that healing starts with understanding, accepting, and having compassion for ourselves—as we are. Therapy can be a powerful step toward that healing and relief—and working towards creating the lives and relationships we want. Having a safe place and a compassionate person with whom to share our grief, our critical or frightening thoughts, our challenges, and our longings can help enormously. Jolie’s approach is warm, curious, and accepting, as well as direct and practical – focusing on what you need to achieve your goals in life.

Her years in the entertainment business, and in corporate and non-profit environments, give her a unique perspective on the challenges of existing authentically, compassionately, and productively in various roles. Jolie also has decades of formal practice and study in Buddhist teachings and meditation and finds that this work has been integral to her own sense of self-acceptance, understanding, and healing.

In addition to private practice, she is a psychotherapist and clinical supervisor at the Blanton Peale Institute and Counseling Center. She also leads meditation groups in clinical and corporate settings.

Message to clients

I know how important it is to have a safe place to go to talk about tough things, and about daily life. Where there are no "shoulds" or expectations to fit in a certain box. This is where healing can begin. I generally work within a psychodynamic structure, also known as talk therapy, which focuses on processing experiences and exploring early events and developmental stuff that can get in the way of functioning and growth today. But I’m also practical. It’s important to have goals and to work with tools that help, and to deal with the here and now. I like to work with humor, and I can be challenging and direct with a light touch. Life is a mixed bag; we’re always going to have challenges along the way. What’s most important is the ability to love, work, and play, without torturing ourselves too much with worry, and without being completely destroyed by life’s inevitable hard knocks. Most of all, I hope to be a compassionate, direct, and objective collaborator, discovering what works best for my clients to make the changes they want in their lives.
