Professional statement

Luis Maimoni is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. His practice focuses on adults, although he accepts clients as young as 15, provided the youth is interested in/seeking therapy.

The focus of his work - relationships - stems from his fascination with relationships of all kinds - couples, triads, poly, kink, etc., as well as the relationship we have with ourselves. Although he is trained in many evidence based practices, he uses attachment (the science of how we relate to, and emotionally attach to others) as the basis for understanding relationships. He has taken additional trainings to address the issues that come up surrounding couples and infidelity.

Therapy with Luis is somewhat structured. He will encourage you to set specific goals, and checks in frequently regarding progress. His style is kind but direct, with various #DadJokes interspersed to bring in the humor that is sometimes needed to break through a difficult topic.

Luis graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1979 with a degree in Political Science. His first career was in sales and sales management. He founded a creative services studio (design, branding, advertising) in 1987. His children were born in 1991 and 1992; they're both successful in their careers and pursuing advanced degrees. He earned his MS in Counseling, and Marriage, Child, and Family Therapy in 2013, and started practicing as a therapist at Masada Homes, a community mental health organization serving the pediatric Medi-Cal population in Los Angeles County. He has been a sole practitioner since June of 2022.

Message to clients

Hi. My name is Luis Maimoni. I am a licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in relationships of all kinds.

Relationships with partners, with friends and family, and with co-workers are vital parts of our lives. When our relationships are great, we feel great. When our relationships are “having difficulties” or “experiencing challenges”, so are we. If you’re reading this, my guess is that one or more of your relationships is not in the “great” category. I can relate.

Many years ago, when my first marriage was breaking down, I felt alone and confused. I sought therapy to figure out what was going on, why it was happening, and what to do about it. The work led to my study of of every kind of relationship, from every perspective imaginable.

In a long since deleted blog post, I wrote “relationships are a lot more complicated than I thought they would be.” I would be my honor to work with you to uncomplicate yours.

ONE MORE THING

Most clients have told me they appreciate my direct style of communicating, but some are less comfortable with it. Yes, therapy should be a “safe place” for you to say whatever you need to say, but as the lawyer once said to Congress, “I am not a potted plant.”

Therapy is an investment of your time and money; I believe the value comes from changes you make that improve your life. If something needs to be said, I’ll say it… probably sooner, rather than later.
