Professional statement

Monica Bergnes is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker located in New York, NY. Monica is passionate about helping people who have experienced trauma, the death of a loved one, or have a complicated relationship with food and their bodies.

Monica’s approach to therapy is based in both traditional talk therapy and evidenced based trauma therapies. She helps clients understand how the ways their bodies respond to traumatic memories functions to keep them safe. She then teaches clients new ways to calm both their minds and bodies in the face of those triggers. Monica takes a trauma-informed approach to therapy, making sure that each of her clients feel safe and supported during sessions. Monica provides EMDR for past and recent trauma. She is also a certified Intuitive Eating Counselor and works with people who need help recovering from disordered eating and chronic dieting.

Monica earned her Master’s degrees in Psychology and Social Work and is a personable, compassionate therapist. She collaborates with clients to explore their pasts, their identities, and their values. Her goal is to empower clients to confront their emotional reactions to stressors and triggers and to teach clients the skills they need to live comfortably.

Message to clients

When you feel safe with your therapist, when you feel you can tell the truth and be accepted, understood and supported, you will be able to do the work of therapy, which is simply to tell the truth about yourself and your experiences.

We will meet once a week over the course of many weeks and you will tell me what's going on in your mind and your body. By teaching me all about you, you will get to see yourself through a receptive and compassionate perspective; you will see yourself through the eyes of an ally.

You may already have an intuitive understanding that whatever troubles you is in some way a response to some kind of hurt in your past or present. You know that you deserve to be understood in the context of your experiences and what you have learned to do to stay safe and survive.

By acknowledging the innate wisdom of your symptoms we can begin to loosen their grip and you will be able to respond to challenges with greater flexibility and equanimity.
