Professional statement

Nathaniel Cunningham is a licensed psychoanalyst in Manhattan. He has treated individuals and couples for years — from diverse communities, and on all kinds of issues. He works with people to decrease anxiety, depression, psychosomatic disorders, intrusive thoughts, to break through creative blocks or address relationship and parenting issues, amongst many other challenges that impact well-being.

He has a Master’s Degree from New York University and graduated from the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies (CMPS). As part of this education, he worked at St. Mary’s Center Harlem, a residential HIV/AIDS facility. He is also a member of the Society of Modern Psychoanalysis (SMP), National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (NAAP), and Division 39 of the American Psychological Association (APA).

His approach is best suited for individuals and couples who are curious about their inner life and seek more than quick answers. He is accepting clients in-person in the Flatiron district on Fifth Avenue, as well as virtually.

Message to clients

I work with academics, creatives, business and tech professionals to solve the internal issues that hold them back. Many individuals began therapy with me because they felt overwhelmed by conflicts with their partner; others were weighed down by a chronic sense of dissatisfaction. For some, the reason for seeking therapy was difficult to put into words — but something was off and they knew they wanted more out of life.

My education underscored the importance of collaboration between therapist and client for a successful analysis. Together, we will work to understand why you feel, think, and respond the way you do, and how unconscious patterns may be shaping your present circumstances. By helping you gain a more complete picture of your life, we can open up new avenues for your future.

At the heart of my approach is the belief that each of us carry a profound and powerful wish to live a meaningful life — to find value in our work and in our relationships. My hope is that therapy will help you reconnect with this wish and, over time, give it a shape that feels true to who you are.
