Professional statement

Dr. Nick Tarantino is a licensed psychologist in Rhode Island offering in-person and virtual therapy sessions. He has a PhD in clinical and community psychology and completed a clinical residency and postdoctoral fellowship at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He is also a researcher with past funding from the National Institutes of Health and has published over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles.

In his practice, Dr. Tarantino uses an integrated approach to care grounded in cognitive and behavioral treatment modalities. He also draws from interpersonal and humanistic orientations and has received training in Cognitively-Based Compassion Training (CBCT), an evidence-based program which uses techniques and principles from Buddhism to promote wellness. While he treats adults of all ages, he specializes in young adults dealing with a variety of concerns including anxiety/stress, depression, life transitions, chronic illness, addictive behaviors, and relationship problems.

Message to clients

“In my early professional years, I was asking the question: How can I treat, or cure, or change this person? Now I would phrase the question in this way: How can I provide a relationship which this person may use for [their] own personal growth?”

― Carl R. Rogers

The ability to grow and thrive is in you. My approach is to offer a safe, honest, supportive, and non-judgmental relationship that can be used as a foundation to try new coping strategies, explore yourself, and make big decisions towards improving your life.

Our work together may involve learning healthy practices from evidence-based interventions (e.g., Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) that give more immediate relief to issues like anxiety, stress, and depression. Understanding and altering enduring beliefs and patterns of behavior, including relationships, which can underlie these issues is often a next step.

I also see myself as a “holistic” therapist. Put simply – this means I believe our physical, mental, and spiritual health are connected and should be considered in therapy. With this in mind, I may encourage us to explore areas of your life seemingly unrelated to your primary concern, such as diet, physical activity, and use of technology.
