Professional statement

Phil is convinced that very few people seek therapy. What they want is relief; that is, to feel better (less depressed, anxious or stuck), fix something (problems with a relationship whether love, family or at work) figure out something (solve a problem or make an important decision without the potential of regret) and/or just talk to someone who will let them speak their mind in a non-judgmental environment. Therapy or coaching is just how they get there. It doesn’t matter who you are, what you do or where, if you’re wanting to feel better, get to that next level or just get on with your life, Phil is here to help.

His background includes being a scientist, a serial entrepreneur and psychologist. He uses a scientific approach to problem solving, decision making and helping people combat mood disorders (depression, anxiety, etc.) He primarily relies on the tenets of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and other empirically proven methods. To Phil, it's about results, not process.

Most people want to talk to someone like Phil because they want to feel better, solve an issue (maybe with a spouse or SO, and others), get "unstuck" or become more empowered in their life and career. Expecting to settle in for months or years of "therapy" isn't on his agenda. He wants you to not need him, or anyone like him, as soon as possible.

Message to clients

To me, therapy is simply a process we use to address issues that keep you from feeling or being your best self. Some are not their best because they're depressed, anxious, feeling unmotivated or stuck, or not sure what to do about a vexing problem or difficult decision. Others are not their best self because their important relationship (or relationships) isn't on track and they're wanting to find a way to improve or "fix" it. Others just want to explore what their future can look like and how to get there.

Many think they must already know what's wrong and be able to tell me where to begin or what to focus on. You really don't. Part of the process is just to talk enough about what you want or don't want to feel and be doing, and the rest is a collaborative effort to focus on what might help. Saying you have some ailment or are some label is rarely of any use to anyone. It really is about getting better, being better and back on track to have the life you've planned or have been building.

Before you begin, all you'll really need is to have an open mind and a willingness to work together. There will almost always be exercises and homework. We will be goal oriented and methodical. In other words, don't worry about getting started, just get started.
