Professional statement

Rachael Swain is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor based in Providence, RI and works with adults with a focus on anxiety, depression, adjustment disorders and women’s issues. Rachael is particularly passionate about helping clients navigate and move from places of “stuckness” and identify pathways for change by drawing out, and building on, the client’s own self-knowledge.

Rachael engages in a largely person-centered practice and believes that by providing a safe, nonjudgmental environment, and through a collaborative effort, she can assist clients in exploring the hows and whys of where they are now and help them get where they want to be. Rachael further draws on evidence-based CBT and mindfulness-based tools to help provide clients practical means to explore long held beliefs, challenge beliefs that no longer serve them, and identify new coping mechanisms to help maintain greater self awareness and amplify conscious choice-making and the client’s unique voice. Rachael regularly brings in the use of practical tools and creative exercises to assist in managing immediate behavioral symptoms.

Her mission is always to create a warm, supportive, space for self-exploration and engages conversationally and with curiosity. Rachael believes in pacing sessions and moving with the client to meet them where they are. Rachael’s ultimate aim in working with clients is to empower them in exploring, making, and maintaining their desired changes and to develop sustainable self-care and self-enrichment strategies that they can use outside of the therapeutic space long after their sessions with her have concluded.

Rachael has experience working in both inpatient and outpatient settings with adults of a variety of diagnoses.

Rachael currently offers in-person and telehealth treatment.

Message to clients

I believe that engagement with therapy can provide an important opportunity for individuals to express themselves wholly and honestly, without fear or judgment. My intention is to always hold safe space for and work with the uncertainty that can sometimes arise when we begin engaging with self-exploration and giving voice to challenging topics or emotions.

I work very collaboratively with clients to ensure that the conversations and treatment goals are client focused and client paced. It’s not uncommon for all of us to know something, but still be hesitant to act on our own self-knowledge so I encourage patience and self-compassion when working toward treatment goals. As the saying goes, “progress not perfection.” I will often provide practical tools or reflective exercises to encourage clients to engage beyond the hour session and will revisit these exercises at subsequent sessions to deepen or further conversations. Over time, I also assist the client in building “a library” of coping skills that they can refer to when experiencing more immediate symptoms.

My goal is that over time, I can help the client work toward greater resolution, self-awareness, and self-confidence and to find healthy ways to understand and manage the symptoms that may manifest when they are struggling with inner and outward conflicts or difficult questions and to acknowledge and celebrate the progress made along the way.
