Professional statement

Rodney Freeze is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, who specializes in Gestalt and body-oriented psychotherapy. As a Certified Sensorimotor Psychotherapist, he facilitates clients’ understanding of the deep connections between the mind, the body, and the emotions, as well as how they interact to create a person’s overall sense of self. By engaging a client’s awareness of how their behaviors & beliefs correlate to any developmental traumas or learned experiences from childhood, Rodney helps a client uncover deeper meaning in their lives, while also helping them change any behaviors that negatively influence their relationships with others.

Rodney was trained as a Gestalt therapist for many years, orienting his work with clients on the present moment experience: helping them to contact deep emotions, embedded negative beliefs, & dysfunctional patterns of behavior through exercises and experiments. He then expanded his knowledge of the mind-body-emotion connection by studying energy work and adding Polarity therapy to his toolbox of techniques. All of these skills were ultimately integrated and enhanced over the last ten years through his study of one of the newest trauma-oriented therapeutic approaches: Sensorimotor.

Rodney’s work is also rooted in family systems theory and attachment issues. His areas of expertise are listed below, but he also specializes in the treatment of trauma (ranging from incest or sexual abuse to long-term childhood neglect or physical abuse), as well as domestic violence, long-term illnesses, or PTSD from military service or narcissistic parenting. He is skilled at assessing a client’s readiness to address trauma issues and uses a psycho-educational approach to help clients best understand when they are ready to address such issues, as well as how to identify & develop their own strengths and resources for healing.

Message to clients

My name is Rodney Freeze, a licensed practitioner for 30 years, specializing in Gestalt and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy.

There are many reasons people come to therapy—frustrations with life or career, relationship issues... even ongoing anxiety or depression that may seem to take over their life. I also specialize in working with trauma -- deep pain related to loss... or any traumatic experience that leaves people feeling alone, broken, or unable to sustain relationships.

My approach is to help people ‘get out of their heads’ and focus more on the ‘here and now experience’ of what's happening in the body, as well as their emotions... it's an integrative, therapeutic process of stitching the experiences of your life together in a way that makes sense... so you can figure out what’s stopping you from moving forward, while also healing and letting go of any pain from your past.

We all have the abilities and strengths to make our lives work, we may just need support in identifying those strengths, while also getting rid of the thoughts, patterns or actions that get in the way of those natural abilities.

That's what I love about Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, it's a collaborative approach, and integrates every aspect of a person's experience: mind, body, emotions... even spirit. So, if you're looking for a therapist that’s creative, easy to connect with, and willing to meet your needs in a safe, personal, and respectful way... give me a call.
