Psychologist, PhD Specialties • Insurance & Fees • LocationsDr. Spencer Cruz-Katz is a licensed psychologist, and the founder of Beacon Psychology in Charlottesville, VA. Dr. Cruz-Katz is a cognitive-behavioral therapist who utilizes components from third-wave treatments such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in the treatment of anxiety and related disorders. Dr. Cruz-Katz earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Fordham University where he focused on the assessment of adolescent trauma exposure.
In his 25 year career, he has worked as a substance abuse counselor, foster care case manager, research assistant, and professor of psychology before joining a large group practice in Richmond, VA. Four years later, Dr. Cruz-Katz opened his own, local practice, Beacon Psychology, where he is now able to work with and in his home community.
Dr. Cruz-Katz prides himself on creating a safe and inviting space where it is understood that you are doing your best - but can use some help to do even better.

Anxiety - Coping with excessive worry, nervousness, or stress; intense discomfort in social settings (social anxiety); sudden and intense feelings of panic (panic disorder)

Emotion regulation - Learning how to effectively manage the ups and downs of intense emotions; developing coping skills to use in a variety of settings to calm oneself and to give an appropriate amount of space to emotions
