Professional statement

Summer Hecht (she/her) is a clinical social worker providing teletherapy in the state of Maryland to individuals, couples+, and families who are invested in creating change. Many of her clients came to Summer with the hope of improving overall life satisfaction and for support with improving their relationships and exploring their identities. Summer is especially passionate about working with two groups of people: parents and young adults. Summer supports parents who are struggling to balance the multitude of identities that come with parenthood, and loves to work with mothers who are feeling burnt out and are trying to find the meaning and peace in motherhood they thought would be immediately apparent but, perhaps, was not. Summer also works with transition-age young adults who need a safe space to explore what movement to the next stage of life will look like for them. Supporting young people with relationships and finding themselves and their paths are particular specialities of Summer's.

Summer's practice is rooted in authenticity. She believes that when a therapeutic relationship is built between two real people (or amongst a group of real people), a unique space is created that allows real progress to be made. That authentic space holds vulnerability and trust, and it is this that allows therapy to heal.

Summer's training has included CBT, DBT, the Gottman Method, and trauma processing therapy. Summer has worked with clients of all ages with a variety of mood disorders, phase-of-life concerns, and relationship struggles. Summer is body-positive, sex/kink-positive, and LGBTQIA-aligned.

Message to clients

Hi, there!

I am a modern therapist, bringing the best of traditional therapy approaches into the 2020s. We can work on CBT or DBT skills, discuss your childhood, practice deep breathing, discuss the benefits of self-care, and work on the tangles in your life. While we're doing that, I promise not to ask "and how does that make you feel?" a million times or psychoanalyze every little thing you share. I promise to always make you feel like I like you more when you sign off our sessions than I did when you logged on. I promise to always be authentic and real with you, and to never make you feel awkward for trying to make a real connection with me. I promise that we are in this together, and that my role in your life is to create space for whatever you need to put there. I promise that whatever it is that you're feeling or going through is a valid human experience, and I want to be there for you while you get through it.

I am a fully virtual therapist, meaning that all of our work together will be done from the comfort of your home/car/job/wherever you happen to be, with no commute time. Sometimes, it is challenging to make the time to take care of ourselves, and my hope is that by eliminating some of the time requirement, therapy will feel more accessible.

I can't wait to meet you.
