Professional statement

Wiley Thomas Pittman is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor with an office in Lumina Station in Wilmington, NC. Tom works with clients of all ages as well as couples. Many of Tom’s clients come in when they have left rehab or are just getting sober, when they are feeling depressed, anxious, or just don’t know where to turn. Tom is particularly passionate about serving those in recovery as well as those dealing with trauma. He also has advanced training in the area of substance use disorder recovery.

Tom is trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), which uses principles from both cognitive behavioral therapy and behavioral therapy, to give clients tools in an effort to help them convert negative thinking patterns and destructive behaviors into positive, healthy outcomes. In session, Tom also employs a Person-Centered approach which allows clients to find growth and fulfillment within themselves.

Tom’s style is very client oriented. When a client first comes in, Tom will assist the client in determining what areas the client wishes to work on. Tom Pittman is dedicated to providing a relationship that is focused on what the client wants to work on based on what the client tells him.

Tom received his Master of Science degree in Professional Counseling from Grand Canyon University. He gained experience at Recovery Innovations, Trillium Health Resources, RHA and Sagestone which allowed him to treat clients suffering from a variety of mental health issues. Tom also spent many years in the business world which enables him to bring a wealth of experience to the counseling profession. Ina addition to private practice, Tom offers telehealth and is committed to meeting clients where they are.

Message to clients

Welcome to STW Counseling. I am so glad you are here. As someone in long term recovery, I understand the value to talking with someone as a means of getting to the root of your issue or issues. I think it’s awesome particularly when men seek out someone to talk to as that’s not the way many of us were brought up! Many of us were taught to just suck it up and go on.

Our sessions will typically last for about 50 minutes unless there is a pressing issue which may necessitate a longer session. While there is a standard fee for these sessions, I do not believe the ability to pay should not keep someone from getting help. Therefore we work on a sliding scale basis for those who cannot afford the standard fee.

I am a firm believer in a person-centered approach which means I want to work on what you the client wants to work on. I don’t have the answers for you, I believe you have the answers and it’s my job to help you get to the answers. I try hard not to tell someone what to do but will happily share what my experience has been. I look forward to hearing from you.
