Therapists Specializing in Identity Development in Rhode Island

Our identity can change and develop throughout life. For many of us, our ideas of who we are and what we believe constantly evolve over the years. Defining your own beliefs, lifestyle, and sense of self can be exciting, but it’s natural to experience some uncertainty or discomfort in the process too. Although identity development is most commonly associated with adolescence, challenges can arise at any time, especially during major life transitions or other times of change.

Therapy can help us better understand ourselves, feel more confident in who we are, and improve our ability to make sense of our world. A therapist might focus on clarifying values to guide your actions through acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) or develop your thoughts and core beliefs through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Some therapists also provide existential therapy, a philosophically-rooted approach that focuses on meaning, freedom, connection, and mortality.

As numerous therapeutic modalities can help with identity development, it can be beneficial to discuss the options with one of the therapists in Rhode Island below who specialize in this area. Therapists have been vetted by the Zencare team for clinically rigorous, quality care. Visit their profiles to watch an introductory video and book a free initial call to find a good fit!

Although the work I do in therapy ends up going in many different directions, the starting point is the same: I believe that when individuals are empowered to make intentional, informed choices about their relationships—choices that reflect their own values, needs, and desires rather than someone else’s—their relationships will be more stable, more satisfying, more sustainable. I want every person I work with to develop: a) insight into which aspects of their relationships have been built around assumptions that may not actually be true or helpful for them, b) clarity about what their values, needs, and desires actually are, and c) skills that will help them translate that insight and clarity into actions that will make all of their relationships—not just their sexual or romantic relationships—more fulfilling and rewarding.

I trust my clients. I trust that they have an intuitive understanding of what kinds of relationships will meet their needs, and that they often just need support in putting that understanding into action; ultimately, my work is about helping my clients have that same trust in themselves. If you'd like support in that process, I want to help. Reach out today to get started.

Hello- I am so looking forward to working with you. As you can see from my statement, I am very interactive with you and would love to hear your concerns. I once told a client, " when you have told me all your stories, even the most difficult ones, you will be well on your way to being healed." I will listen, cry, and laugh with you as you move along to freedom from your stuck narratives. I am still only doing telehealth and have had some of my most profound sessions remotely. Who knew! I hope you will join me.

Darkness can only be scattered by light, hatred can only be conquered by love-John Paull II. I walk with my clients as they deepen their understanding of themselves and process areas of their lives that have caused deep pain. My goal is to help my clients develop evidence-based coping skills and processing techniques to come to a fuller understanding of how their past experiences and world views impact their relationships with loved ones. I believe that one must first develop a positive relationship with themselves to create a strong and powerful relationship with others. Together, we can work in a safe and trauma-informed therapeutic approach to have a more fulfilled relationship with yourself and others.

People often come to me having lost their way. You may be holding feelings of dissatisfaction and helplessness; you may be plagued with self-doubt, struggling in relationships, or even numb to feeling emotion. It may be a challenge to envision new possibilities for yourself in school, work or home. Amidst endless options of technological connection, being seen and heard for who you are is exceedingly rare.

As your psychiatrist, I am never solely a “prescriber.” This term undermines your need to be psychologically and personally understood and accepted. While medications are extremely important when appropriate, I first and foremost offer you authenticity in relationship. I strive to know and acknowledge you, to be sensitive to the feelings around you. I support and also challenge you to bring new possibilities from imagination to actuality. You can and deserve change.

I realize you may feel shame or guilt in response to experiencing symptoms of a mental health disorder. You may have stereotypes as to what it means to be diagnosed with a disorder and to undergo treatment. I feel it’s important for you to understand you are more than a diagnosis, and your worth is not defined by your diagnosis. I believe sometimes we are simply suffering in response to a challenge presented by life. We can work together to find the path out of your suffering.

The only conflict you will ever have is the one inside yourself. –M. Scott Peck.
My job is not to tell you what to do. Or even give you advice. Or presume that I know what's better for you than you do. My job is to support you emotionally and listen non-judgmentally as you find your way through life's bumps and bruises. We often think that the source of our conflict is our job, spouse, children, parents, siblings, money...take your pick. No doubt that dealing with people and situations is often stressful. But it's our own conflicting values and desires about how to handle these things that tend to make us anxious, depressed...stuck. Sometimes, simply talking about what's bothering you helps you feel better. What I do is compassionately listen and then gently point out where you sound conflicted within yourself. So, psychotherapy becomes a journey of insight that we take together to find your unique answers to these questions-- to find out what you really want.

There is an inherent discomfort that is part of the therapeutic process, as people tend to seek out therapy in times of emotional suffering. The information gleaned during these times can be invaluable to our healing. The act of beginning therapy is to honor one's vulnerability and from this place we build compassion. So come as you are. I welcome your skepticism, frustrations, turmoil, and criticism. All of your experiences matter in this process of moving toward living your life with greater ease.

My absolute love is helping sensitive LGBTQIA+ introverts who have been pushed to the margins discover their voice.

Maybe you’re deeply empathetic, you’ve been told you’re too sensitive, an over-thinker, take things too personally, too quiet, too withdrawn, too much, too... something! Roughly 15-20% of the population has a level of sensory processing sensitivity and about 25-40% of the population are introverts. If you suspect this describes you, you’re in good company.

I think us sensitive introverts have unique needs, ways to tend to ourselves, and types of emotional nourishment that are under-appreciated in the dominant culture. And when we’re navigating a life that involves various intersections, things can be really difficult, even overwhelming.

It’s very important to me that the therapy space honors all pieces of your identity. I offer a judgement-free zone for those interested in exploring and navigating topics related to power, privilege, oppression, and marginalization (e.g., white supremacy, transnegativity, homophobia, sexism, ableism, etc.). In the spirit of full transparency, I believe that as a human who embodies a number of structural privileges, my anti-racist and anti-oppressive learning is never finished, which is humbling.

My goal is to offer you the highest quality holistic counseling that I can, so any gains you make in therapy will last the rest of your life. And I always emphasize that no matter who you are or where you come from, your story is honored here.

My style is interactive and pragmatic, yet also reflective and insight oriented. I help people approach life transitions in hopeful, creative and fulfilling ways. I specialize in the identity work of young adulthood and work with many undergraduates, graduates and international students. I help people develop more useful, creative and compassionate ways of understanding and working with themselves. My clients often tell me that the therapy has helped them feel much better, more hopeful and more meaningfully engaged in their lives.
