Professional statement

Cathay Che is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a "boutique" virtual private practice offering remote sessions to clients and couples in New York, California, Hawaii and Rhode Island. Cathay specializes in facilitating the development of healthy identities during life transitions such as divorce, new motherhood, perimenopause or gender affirming care. She also offers guidance for those navigating biracial or bicultural literacy, transracial adoption, intergenerational conflict, anxiety, perfectionism, codependence, impulsivity, and grief. Having lived in New York for over two decades, she has a particular affinity for working with creative individuals in the arts or media and BiPoc members of the LGBTQ communities. Whatever the reason her clients enter therapy, she is passionate about supporting them to become more attuned to their emotions, wants and needs and to find greater satisfaction in their personal and professional lives.

Cathay has 13 years of experience helping clients with addictions and out of control behaviors, seeing these attempts to self-soothe as a symptom of underlying issues. She gently guides each client toward uncovering the personal history that drives these behaviors and to develop sustainable coping skills . She is a certified Sex Therapist as well as a trained practitioner of Psychodrama and Sociometry for relational trauma. She also has a special sensitivity to the powerful bond people form with their pets and can aid in this grieving process which is sometimes dismissed by society.

Cathay draws from a number of evidence-based modalities including Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and mindfulness practices. Her approach is rooted in Attachment Theory, understanding each client's unique background and perspective in order for them to set realistic, attainable goals.

Her small weekly caseload allows her to genuinely listen to her clients, remember personal details and provide insightful observations and feedback.

Message to clients

I'm a deeply empathetic therapist who will listen to what you want and what you say very carefully. I only see a handful of people a week, so I will remember what you tell me and who you are.

I understand that many people enter therapy with low trust around disclosing personal details, or having had negative experiences with past mental health providers. We can explore that and move at your pace.

I believe successful therapy also relies on some natural chemistry between therapist and client -- you should want to talk with me and tell me things. To facilitate that, I suggest to clients that we start with up to three trail sessions. If we make it to the third session, we can discuss more formal treatment goals and set up a regular time to meet. Please note that I do require new clients to meet with me weekly for the first three months.

If we build a successful alliance, I can, with your consent, provide you with gentle and honest feedback. My goal will be to collaborate with you on behavioral "experiments" that may help you discover ways to make accessible, sustainable changes that feel "just right" for you.
