Professional statement

Dr. Alok Kanojia is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist in Boston, MA who specializes in substance abuse and addiction, depression, anxiety, mindfulness practices, and integrative psychiatry. Dr. Kanojia uses evidence-based psychiatry along with holistic approaches to produce powerful patient outcomes.

Dr. Kanojia utilizes an eclectic treatment approach that is grounded in mindfulness techniques, neuroscience, and Ayurvedic principles. He utilizes Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Motivational interviewing (MI) to help patients change their behaviors and structure their lifestyle. After gaining control of symptoms, he expands the scope of treatment to include meditation techniques that encourage self-reflection, gaining a better understanding of the self, and help patients find their place in the world. This dualistic approach of short term symptom control and long term resilience building is particularly effective for depression, anxiety, addictions, and stress management.

Dr. Kanojia is able to take a 360-degree approach with his clients by helping them integrate elements of both western and eastern medicine, including the use of both herbal remedies and more pharmaceutical medications.

Dr. Kanojia’s understanding of the old and new are especially powerful for intervening with the stressors of everyday life. Along with mood disorder and stress management, he is able to effectively treat substance abuse and technology addictions. Dr. Kanojia is best known for his clinical work in mindfulness, mental resilience, and video game addiction.

Message to clients

I use holistic psychiatry to help patients recover from mental illness and rebuild health and find meaning. I focus on symptoms initially, while simultaneously building health through meditation and Eastern medical principles. Over time, my patients' symptoms reduce, and we shift focus to finding meaning and fulfillment in life. I work best with patients who are active participants in their care. I am not a ‘pill for your problem’ psychiatrist. While I use medication, it is part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes meditation, herbs, lifestyle overhaul, and the latest evidence-based treatment combined with ancient principles of medicine.
