Professional statement

Nick Barnes is a board-certified psychiatrist and pain medicine physician with an integrated psychiatry practice. Dr. Barnes has a unique set of skills to comprehensively address anxiety, depression, chronic pain, post traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and addiction. His therapeutic approach integrates psychodynamic psychotherapy, mindfulness based therapy, psychopharmacology, and medical management for chronic pain. His training in multiple styles of psychotherapy allows him to tailor his approach based on the needs of each patient. By helping people recognize what they can change vs what they cannot change, Dr. Barnes helps people reduce distress and suffering.

Dr. Barnes believes that taking a holistic approach to mind and body care with psychotherapy can alter the trajectory of a life, and can be more powerful and life-changing than any medicine. When appropriate, however, Dr. Barnes prescribes his clients medication to help them manage their symptoms, allowing for more bandwidth to process through moments of distress. He dedicates himself not only to evidence-based physical treatment of symptoms, but also to understanding and alleviating the root causes of suffering.

Dr. Barnes received his M.D. from Dartmouth Medical School where he was recognized for humanism in medicine through the Arnold P. Gold Humanism Honor Society. He completed residency in psychiatry and a fellowship in interventional pain medicine at Harvard Medical School and is dual board-certified in psychiatry and pain medicine. He has previously held staff positions at Cambridge Health Alliance, Spaulding Rehabilitation Center, Boston Pain Care, and Psych Garden.

Message to clients

I strive to provide treatment that is effective, evidence-based, and empathic. The core treatment of my practice is talk therapy. When appropriate, I will combine my knowledge of medications, pain treatments, and other medical interventions to create a treatment plan that is right for you. I provide a private, professional, and comfortable environment conducive to feeling safe enough to allow reflection and growth. I treat my clients with the utmost respect, recognizing the privilege of being allowed into another's internal world.
